Well, that's what I'm trying to do in my spare time. So far I have tested creating and restoring images, this weekend I'll take a deeper breath and try restoring a bootable partition on another spare drive formatted as RAID. If all goes well, I'm gonna take the deep plunge and perform the whole process on my production system, and will answer myself if nobody has answered until then.

I can't "reinstall like I want", my IT department needs some setup that I'd rather not touch. I have the right to move around hard drives, etc, but there's an admin account whose password I don't know and that must be kept. The whole purpose of my question is if it's possible to re-architecture my partition map while leaving the underlying installation intact.

Was stuck with Sidekick until today. I'll never look back.

comment MBP 2011: external displays not detected automatically
I've narrowed the issue a bit more: when on the login screen, it works. Even when my user account is logged in and the login screen is shown after I wake the computer back from sleep. (I've got an administrator account, but no right to migrate/reinstall by myself as it's a work computer that needs some special setup from my IT department).

All software updates are done on day one, I'm totally up-to-date. As to zapping the PRAM, I've done it several times. On the first reboot after zapping the PRAM, it works; but subsequent plugging/unplugging of an external monitor doesn't auto-detect it. I don't want to have to reset the PRAM each time I plug/unplug a monitor (at least twice a day).

comment Is it recommended to use Mac wifi sharing for long periods of time?
WEP only, for now. Perhaps it won't stay that way forever (wink, wink).
