comment Is there a program I can install to make title/header bars attach to the window?
PS. I feel your pain in an opposite way. As a long-time OSX user, Mavericks' new feature of a menu bar on each monitor bites me sometimes. When I'm using an application on the second monitor and try to select a command from the menu on the primary monitor — oops! That's a different application's menubar!

comment Soft switch for Mac sound output
FYI you can bypass this issue by using a USB audio adapter so you could plug the headset into USB and not use the headset jack. Then the sound volume menu icon would work. It would cost $10-30.

@noelmcg Did you check the RAID tab too? It may be you have to delete the raid set for the space to become available.

I'd be interested to see the "Partition" tab selected from the top menu in that Disk Utility screen grab. Is there any empty space at the bottom of the Partition Layout graphic?

Could it be you have become so accustomed to the silky-smooth rendering of the retina display, "normal" displays now just look chunky?

I wouldn't put much stock in those rendering images. The external monitor is 1920x1200 pixels, the 15" MBP is 2880x 1800. So when part of the window overlaps the external, it's likely rendering the pixels for your external monitor.
