comment Command + fullstop VS Ctrl + C
Wow, that's legacy... From my understanding the Command-key on Apple OSes was traditionally used to issue commands, while control-key was a modifier key to Enter control characters. Up to OSX, there was no commandline, which traditionally is controlled using control characters. Thus the easy to memorable CMD+. (Read "Command full stop") was used. With the xnu Backend of OSX, Apple added the traditional Ctrl-C (Read " Cancel") as a lot of software expected it. Besides: CMD+. to interrupt Command line tasks is Terminal.app specific.

What Apple keyboard did not have a Control key? I'm not aware of any.

Are you sure you don't just have auto login enabled? If so, you have to have a password set. Have a look at Systemeinstellungen->Benutzer und Konten. Set one for this procedure.

Little bit off topic, but to me it's a song by Broken Bells.

It is NOT locked. It reads "Schreibstatus: Lesen/Schreiben" (that German for R/W). Does diskutil reformat /Volumes/Stick output some more information? Besides "The Ghost Inside" ist ein schon ziemliches gutes Lied ;)

comment How do I install Mavericks onto external HD but from inside VirtualBox
@Tetsujin: 1) OS X does NOT come with drivers for Virtual Box. Best you can get are fallback drivers. The performance is horrible. In addition to that, OS X does NOT remove drivers for components it does not see at the time of installation or first boot. It will load them if booted on real hardware. If you get problems there, reset the kext-cache. 2) Can you elaborate why you think it wouldn't work? I can't see any reason.

Does it really do this? What is your concept of having no users? Broken /etc/passwd?

comment What info does a Mac broadcast and how to hide it?
1) OS X comes with an incredibly outdated userland. 2) If we are talking about using OS X as a server, we are talking about OS X Server. While it might be OK for a home user, professional users will find themselves on the shell immediately and thus could have used some real server OS in the first place. 3) A server OS that has a non-removable GUI, tends to refuse to boot headlessly and only boots on certain hardware?! 4) Some parts like smbx are NOT documented AT ALL. 5) Try setup routing that goes beyond Internet Sharing. There is NO way with stock tools!

Think about not using OS X. It is an awful server OS.
