OK problem solved. Found a copy in a backup I had, which was unlocked. So it's strange how it got locked by OSX Server using a passphrase I supplied, which I have since forgotten. That doesn't normally happen to me :-$

+1 OK, so you have confirmed that the pass phrase was chosen by me and not by the system. That will give me something to work with.

Thanks for the info on mdfind; I'll have to wait until they reappear before seeing what these images are.

I have rebooted and the disks have not re-appeared. Having started Xcode again, they still haven't appeared. I even started the iOS Simulator, as still nothing. Weird. Perhaps they are only there when installing a new version of Xcode?

Well I don't see where the .dmg would be mounted from. I understand how to get rid of them, but I was hoping to find out what they are. Perhaps the question is better asked on stackoverflow.com...

comment R shiny crash on loading examples (__cxa_guard_acquire detected deadlock) change default C++ standard library
No. I don't know the architecture of R shiny, but if it's based on dlopen() of a .dylib then I'm pretty sure both sides will need to use the same C++ library, especially if they are passing standard C++ objects across that boundary.

If you compile/link for one of lib{std}c++ then you can only load that one. The symbols are different, not to mention the .dylibs have different names. Overriding at build time is the way to go.

@Mark Yeah I have used the launchd .plist provided with the system. The default inet_interfaces setting should work out-of-the-box, however it doesn't. Perhaps there is something else going on that I'm not aware of with the Mac version?
