I am a Computer Geek that loves to play in a lot of sandboxes, including web and graphic design, database administration, music composition and performance, and the art of photography. I've worked for a major corporation as well as various colleges. I love to learn new things but also love to share my knowledge with others.

I have the following experience:

  • B.S. in Computer Science
  • 1 Year as a Test Engineer
  • 3 Years in Photography
  • 6 Years in Graphic and Web Design
  • 8 Years as an Oracle Database Administrator
  • 15 Years Programming Experience (mostly PL/SQL and PHP with sprinkles of VB, C, and C#)

comment iPhone as AirTunes receiver
@RickDT If you use the link below (macstories.net/tutorials/…), it details how to get it working. I did have to go through some funny business to get mine happy, but I think it was because I tried to go another route. If you follow the directions, it should work, but if not, you may have to look into launching the airtunesd process manually (which will require a terminal app + OpenSSH installed) with "launchctl load -w com.apple.airtunesd.plist". (See: xsellize.com/topic/96599-o-airplayspeaker-v10-repo/page__st__20)

Just a side note from someone who has this working on their iDevices: when locked, neither the iPhone nor the iPad will play without constant dropouts (which are quite annoying). So while I love the feature (especially for piping audio anywhere), just be aware to have your iDevice unlocked prior to playing audio on it. Also recognize that there is a slight delay, so if you're trying to sync audio and video, you might have some fun with that (esp when using airfoil).

comment Can I reduce how Mobile Safari refreshes web pages when multi-tasking or browsing in multiple tabs?
Nothing useful for you now, but as I understand it, iOS 5 does a better job at managing this kind of thing. Of course, you're still limited by the RAM on the device, so sooner-or-later you have to page things out of memory.

comment AppTamer for RAM
You can't free up any more RAM than is free-able natively by the OS -- something the OS will do automatically on its own when it needs it. If more memory is really necessary, do just that: get more memory. :-)

Totally agree. I hated this stuff when I was on Windows -- all it did was page everything out -- which was fine if you wanted your rad-3D game to start up just bit faster without having to page things out as it loaded, but it only slowed everything else down like all-get-out. Having to wait for Explorer to draw the desktop background line-by-line was ridiculous, and yet I never saw the end of those kinds of apps being paraded around. RAM is RAM. The OS is generally quite good at managing it - more likely, better than us humans. Leave it to manage it, and life is better, IMO. ;-)

comment Wifi drops on iPad
Try forgetting your network connections and setting them back up again. You can do this under General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. I've had to do this every once in a blue moon to get things working right (with no good reason as to why things failed), but since then, things have been working fine. Just make sure you don't reset anything else!!! ;-)

comment How to play Flash games in iPad without internet connection?
Pretty much out-of-luck on this one. iSwifter requires internet access to work.

Do this in a terminal: "ps -eaf | grep httpd"; if you get anything more than the "grep" line, things are running (but may need restarted). Otherwise Apache isn't running at all. (I've had occasions on other platforms where Apache will be running with httpd processes, but not respond to requests, so it is worth a check to see if there are processes running.)

comment iPhone Apps in Waiting mode for the last 4 days
When you did the restore from backup, was the app already in "waiting" mode, or did you have to go to the App Store to initiate the download? Second, what version of iOS are you on? 4.3.3?

comment Is there anything faster than Veency for iPhone?
+1 for Display Recorder. I had looked at it previously, but it didn't have live view at the time. Looks compelling. Too bad it doesn't do keyboard, though. Surely there would be keyboard focus issues with the VNC app in the background, but it could work, I suppose, to some degree.

+1 for mentioning iSynergyClient. Hadn't come across that one, and am eager to try it out. Too bad it doesn't have keyboard support yet; that would be so cool.
