comment How can I copy files from my Mac to PC via Microsoft Remote Desktop?
@Senseful I think you should clarify that you're using RDC's file sharing feature, not Mac's native "File Sharing" via SMB (in File Sharing options). RDC's file sharing sets up something that looks like an SMB share (starts with 2 backslashes).

comment iPhone 4s: How do I see versions of my apps?
Thanks - that worked. I thought I tried that, but I might've clicked on a built-in app instead one from the Store. Built-in ones don't show the version.

I know what it was - you can't have a trailing slash!

Ah, you're right. I got an error before, but I must've mistyped something.

Note that the spaces/special chars problem would exist in any solution - the shell can't know that you meant to pass 1 parameter rather than 2 separate ones.

I think you meant ln -s ~/Library/path/to/folder folder. One minor disadvantage to this method (ie symlinking) is that the link will be broken if the "original" (ie the target) is moved or renamed.

If you're using the bash script, you should put the filename in single quotes if it has any spaces or special characters. However, this will prevent ~ from being expanded. The best thing is not to use quotes, and to tab complete the filename so bash will properly "escape" the special characters. E.g. type ~/Library/Application then press tab. If Application Support was the only match, the shell should have inserted a backslash before the space. You can also manually use a backslash to escape.

I just tried using ~ and it doesn't work with the one-line osascript command. I suggest using the script file instead, because the ~ is converted automatically.

comment How can I adjust the apparent color temperature of my display in OS X?
Here's a bonus tip: a command-line utility to set the display brightness (ie in lieu of the F1 and F2 keys). hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090901021817717

Maybe I don't understand the difficulty, but can't you just set F.lux's daytime slider to 2700? When you say "sometimes", do you mean algorithmically predictable times/dates? If so, then a script would solve your problem. I think it's possible to write a script to force F.lux to a certain daytime temp (or nighttime for that matter).

comment Text unselected when clicking to activate Terminal window (OS X Lion)
Thanks again, but this can cause yet another headache: all the windows that are activated during cycling are also brought to the top (as expected), disturbing the stacking order of other apps' windows. I keep some term windows behind everything else, and would like them to stay back there when possible. Yeah, I'm picky. Nice try though.

Thanks. I knew about the keyboard shortcuts, but usually nothing beats clicking the window itself. If I have 3 terminal windows on the current desktop, Cmd+backquote may take me to the window I didn't have my eye on.

+1. It boggles my mind why they'd hide it in a web interface...

comment How can I install Adobe Flash manually or without giving root access?
Why is it not any safer? Can executables in the pkg be run when a pkg is installed? What would these look like in the pkg file? Btw, the pkgutil terminal util can unpack (--expand) a pkg file.

comment Is there a way to password protect individual apps?
@Austin you're entitled to your downvote of course, but I don't understand your reason. I think my caveats and paranoia sections should be enough to indicate that this is not meant to be a secure solution - it's only a deterrent. I added your caveat, but it's essentially the same idea behind caveat #2. Also, the OP said that he/she didn't care about another person reading "already retrieved emails".

Wow, 3 upvotes in 4 hours? I didn't expect too many people to use such a hack, especially since you have to create one applescript for each app you want to protect. I'd like to hear how people are using my solution, even if just for learning new tricks.

comment How to prevent ssh from adding my key to ssh-agent on Snow Leopard?
The "AskPassGUI" worked. Looks like it's actually the passphrase gui that did the adding to ssh-agent.

I will try your "AskPassGUI" solution when I'm at my SL machine. If it works I'll accept your answer. Also, I reverted /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.openbsd.ssh-agent.plist and put my modified copy in /Library/LaunchAgents/. My mod was loaded.

@chris-johnsen I realize you're trying to be helpful, but please try to understand the details of the problem before laying out an entire step-by-step solution.

comment How to prevent ssh from adding my key to ssh-agent on Snow Leopard?
@chris-johnsen are you actually testing this on Snow Leopard ? SSH on SL acts differently from Leopard. I know that SL's ssh is adding my key to the ssh-agent because I tried this on a new Mac. I can clear the stored key with "ssh-add -D" afterward and then I get the passphrase dialog box again, but that's not an acceptable solution. Logging out will also clear the stored key (this behavior is consistent with quitting ssh-agent). The problem is reproducible. I'm not the only one: serverfault.cms-forex.info/details/144147/…
