comment Which process is periodically writing to the disk?
Now (when I am back home from work) I see that the activity has come down (peak is around 900 KB/s). What was open in the morning is open now: Twitter App, Chrome and text edit (no changes made there. I typed something 4 days ago that I want to remember, but too lazy to save, and to think where to save)

Yes, I understand these. But how frequently? I have a lot of free RAM: Now around 5GB (added this detail to question as well)

Did you try the default Cmd+Shift+3? I suspect it works, but I am at work and don't have a mac handy

Are you sure then none of the systems go to sleep? Perhaps you have checked this already but this is one of the "classic" symptoms in such situations.

comment Random 100% Finder CPU Usage On One Account
Three things that caused similar 100% CPU usage for me in the past: 1. Time Machine backup (after a long time. May happen if you backup to n external drive that is no always connected), 2. QuickSilver (I had it once when I upgraded and one other time) and 3. Firefox. (Of these TimeMachine and QuickSilver may be running in the background)

comment Is there any network monitor software with a notification area icon?
How do you connect to the Internet? If via airport express, the airport icon has "levels": More the number of "waves" on it, better the strength.
