high five bmike

I'm Mike Bradshaw. Please contact me if I can be of assistance as one of the Moderators of Ask Different on Stack Exchange.

Note, If you are emailing for help answering your question as opposed to help with moderation of the site, be sure to send a link to the question. I can't answer every troubleshooting question here (my paying customers have priority). If you have an exceptionally tough problem to solve, I do love challenges. Help us help you by asking a stellar question.

I'm often in the chat rooms here, but I'm also very much on the twitter as @bmike.

There are many paths to turning on file vault. Which are you using?

Is this basically "How do I know which system files are needed" but expanded to include arbitrary third party software as well? It seems like it's too broad for a quick answer - but I'd rather get it honed down before closing it for that reason.

comment Under what conditions is internet required to watch a rented/downloaded movie on iPhone/iPad?
I haven't been able to reverse engineer the conditions and haven't seen it blogged publicly. Pausing and putting in airplane mode works well for me in practice.

Mark is correct - it's very unsafe to install arbitrary files downloaded from the internet. Unless the author is known, I'd recommend not installing this if you don't have good anti virus or a test machine with no sensitive data on it and can evaluate the package.

Could you elaborate on what specifically above will not work. Answers can be sorted by votes, time and newness, so there's no set order.

As shopping questions are off topic and we prefer one question per question the solution seems obvious

comment How Do I Disable Remote Management and Enable Screen Sharing?
You will lose your VNC connection immediately if you toggle off Remote Management. If only systemsetup allowed you to toggle these settings, this would be a one line ssh command. What version of OS is running on the remote Mac and do you perhaps have a Mac you can control that runs the same version of the OS?

It would be best if you edited those details in to this answer or made a new answer. Questions work best when they are short and precise. Answers work best when there is some narrative - what the initial thoughts were - how you got to a solution and in the end a summary of how things work.
