If the rootkit can detect the operation of an executable on a flash, it may be able to hide it's actions. Better, to boot the suspect mac in target mode, then scan from the trusted mac.

How do you FIND the name collision files? I'm working with restoring a 500 GB user directory. Once found, how can you rename them in the TM backup so that they will restore properly?

Hmm. Need to write to the author. The page makes it sound like a linux program. The only mention of mac I ever found was snow leopard, and Apple keeps adding new 'features' to things. Thanks for mentioning it. Suggest that you write it up as an answer. Include the fact that's it is actual mac command line tools, etc.

Good call. I found gdisk in my search, but using it appears to require creating a linux boot disk. I couldn't find a mac binary. That was more work than I was willing to contemplate at the time. I have since solved it using fdisk.

I did that. Tables were the same, headers were different (dd + md5) I don't have a tool that will parse the secondary header.
