Fits exactly the job, works exactly as advertised. Thanks.

I went for the latter.

Thanks, it's back now. Apple did a wonderful job (paid nothing, got it back in less than a week). I can finally login to accept your answer :)

Thanks! I tried the easy SMC reset, with no luck, and decided that opening up my MBA was not a job for me. Thanks to thew last EU directive on consumer rights, it's still under 'EU warranty', so Apple is fixing it at their expense. The diagnostic tool at the store confirmed that the Toshiba SSD was at fault.

comment Skipping .DS_Store files when copying between two external drives
Making sure that there was nothing on target was my first move, but the problem occurred inside the archive, which is large and therefore likely to contain errors. And yes, rsync saved my day :)

I don't know that, otherwise I would have deleted the file manually. It took place as I described it: I dropped a large archive folder at the root of a new hard drive, and it repeatedly failed midway because of the message posted above. I cannot say which .DS_Store file among the hundreds in my archive was causing trouble, so skipping them was the best strategy.

ls- al shows nothing particular: I presume it's a corrupted file issue (the .DS_Store files have been causing trouble for some time now).

That is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!

I'm copying directly to the disk root, not to an existing directory, and there are no existing files on the target, so there is no overwrite.

Easiest/Most expensive.

Unfortunately, the amount of combining I have to do requires an automated solution for generating the TOC.

Same observation here, you get what you pay for, no free tool surpasses PDFpenPro. I have version 5.8.5 that combines PDF files through the AppleScript menu, anything new in version 6? And most importantly, does it create a TOC for the final result?

comment How can I change the font used in Preview PDF notes?
The only explanation I can find is that nobody at Apple is actually using that feature, otherwise someone would have noticed and asked why notes do not use a generic font like Lucida Grande.

This should work. It's a corrupt file issue. Also run brew doctor, brew cleanup and brew update to be safe.

I second the ridiculousness of the current situation.

I understand the wording is awful, thanks for your help. I've also reported this question to Google for further help.

The filename would do perfectly.

I'm pretty sure it does not, given the comments at the link.

The help pages do not mention anything like the issues that I report. It could be just me experiencing that kind of trouble, perhaps due to TotalFinder.

comment Resetting user permissions to their default mode
It went alright with the solution I posted above because I have a preference for a method without restarting. My remaining issue is that I still don't understand how I generated the issue in the first place. I previously had two user sessions and transfered files between them through the Public folder. Errors seem to have occurred at several points when doing so.
