comment Is there a way to 'search' for items on the desktop by typing the first few letters of the file name?
Can you clarify a bit further? What are you typing those letters in? A search bar or the actual desktop? Same question for the Mac, desktop or Spotlight? As an aside, a reasonably new Mac will index single file changes typically within a second so unless you have a different problem, that wouldn’t be it.

comment Mac (OS X 10.9.2) no longer saving screen shots
Two things… First, what happens when you try this? Command-Space (or click on spotlight) then type ‘screen shot’. It should show a list of all of the screen shots that you’ve taken. Then you could find out where they’re being saved by default. I’d then click on the ’show all in finder’ to get a window open which would allow you to sort. Second, instead of using ‘~’ in your defaults write, try /users/yourhomefolder/Desktop instead. I don’t think that this command understands the tilde character.

comment Is there any Mac software to handle archives (zip, rar, 7z, tar, etc.) that allows browsing?
The developer has recently released 'The Archive Browser' which offers these features. It's $4 in the App Store.

comment How to remove unsupported format podcasts from iTunes download queue on iPad/iPhone
Ahh, I didn't read that part. On the iPad, in the Downloads tab of iTunes, if I swipe to the right on the podcast, it gives me the option to delete the download, similar to how you can delete an email message without viewing it. BTW, how did you get an unsupported file format in the iTunes app?

comment iTunes U: How can I extract audio from video lectures?
The ffmpeg solution linked to above can enable the extraction of the audio without requiring re-encoding. Ergo, it's much faster and it won't diminish the quality at all.

comment What is Mac OS X Lion's Finder Font?
When I use quicklook on an html page that lacks formatting (i.e. the formatting is in an external css file), I get what appears to be Times New Roman. I don't see any reference to that in the above list of default font settings. Where is this decision made?

comment If I use a prepaid SIM card from AT&T retail store in iPhone, do I get 3G or GSM service?
Yes. That chart is correct. Assuming you are in a coverage area with both 2G and 3G. If you were using Bell or Telus' network in Canada, they don't have GMS or GPRS/EDGE so you would lose all service if you disabled 3G.

comment Does an ipad last in a public exhibition?
Shortly after it launched, I wanted to research a power adaptor for them while in the local Apple Store. Two of theirs were out of service. They remove them and replace them when it happens so most people aren't aware. Having a spare would be good insurance.
