Thanks for the update. Did he try the 'Apple Service Diagnostic'-Tools? It's a Collection of Software Tools (not available for the public) which should have reported the faulty logic board.

comment Yosemite on an Early 2008 iMac 20" with 4GB gives too many beachballs
Since the HD has an external Thermal Sensor you can change it with any SSD - you just have to attach the Thermal Sensor to the SSD or the iMac will increase the Fan to max. Speed. If the change is too complicated you could ask an apple Retailer if they change it for you (for a fee of course).

You could change the Drive to an SSD - it will work wonders on the performance!

comment Help with resizing hard drive after failed Boot Camp
You are definitely missing the EFI Partition (around 200 MB) and the Apple_Boot Partition (around 120 MB). Very strange.

comment How can I disable unused Services in Mavericks?
Can you give an example which services you mean? Some are added by other Apps, so ti's a very general question IMO.

comment How to fix AFP where some users connect after 4 minutes and others never connect (spinning progress bar and no authentication dialog)?
Additionally, where are you trying to connect to? Another Mac with Shareing enabled? A NAS with an AFP-Share?

Could you look into the Console (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app)? There are probably some entires there which would be useful in identifying the problem. Please post the entries.

Can you access the console.app and post the last entries? I had a somewhat similar situation a while ago - it was a hardware error (grapic memory had overheated), the mainboard had to be replaced.

Start the console.app (found ind /Applications/Utilities/) and look what entries are produced by mail.app. Post the results here.

Have you looked into the Console? Perhaps there are some error-entries which could explain the slow performance. Post anything related.
