All devices use the SATA interface which is a standard. The SATA standard also defines the voltage and current ratings for devices too. The new device you're putting in should not impact your motherboard or cause any damage because the device will stay within the SATA voltage & current ratings. It cannot draw more current or a higher voltage because the motherboard will not supply it. At worst, the device will not work, and the main system will remain safe.
