comment OS X Lion Server multiple postgresql installs
What you like to do, replace Apples PostgreSQL, run a developing instance ? All services on server need PostgreSQL to work and launch it if it needs it - also all scripts are designed for the default paths. So, tell us what you had done and what you plan to do ... which for your second postgres binary (I hope you know, that the brew PostgreSQL is launched as admin using a .plist).

comment How can I control a Mac through TS-Gateway?
To configure screen sharing (VNC + password) and remote login (also FTP) in the preferences pane is self explaining. The same is it with port forwarding (only 22) on your gateways / firewalls. On your client open a terminal and enter ssh -L 6900:127.0.0.1:5900 -N User@Hostname see man ssh for the details of the switches. The ssh establishes a tunnel from your local machine to the remote (needs a working DNS query). Open in Finder <Go to => Connect with> and enter vnc://127.0.0.1:6900. Instead of 6900 you can use any free ports BUT NOT the VNC ports. See also ssh(d)_config/ services in /etc

You can also use VNC over SSH if you prefer it more then VPN.

;-) brew does nothing else then to look which dependencies are need and build all what is needed. But at the end, the configure script uses the settings of your machine thats why only x86_64 builds are there. Don´t know which Lynx you use but mine don´t supports SSL (thats a little problem). Run ./configure --help=short (in the directory of the Lynx source) to see all build options. You can check that in terminal using lynx https://asslsite.

comment How do I change the root password?
Some more informations, as I told you, root is deactivated by default and root has no password by default (it is blank). You can´t access / login at an deactivated account (the option in the Server Admin Tools is called something like the user is allowed to use the account). So, check the tutorials here whether root is already activated or not and how to reset it´s password. If you give a dog a bone the dog will be happy but we can´t do anything with half informations. Check the hardware and buy Lion/Mountain Lion if possible or a second hand disk of Snow Leopard. A Linux root works different.

So, you need a libidn.dylib which was build for 32 and also 64 bit and I don´t know how to fix this with brew (builds by default a 64 bit lib). As I told, I don´t use MacPorts, Fink or Homebrew ... so I post a new answer the long way to build all from source.

comment Protect my files from local admins
I earn my daily money which things like that and it works. You can call it obscure or whatever but the question was to "protect". If you have the required things and knownledge then it is no problem. But you are also right FileVault 2 is save as it is possible (even there is a way in).

comment Source a script from a URL in bash
As long, as you don´t answer what you had done and what you like to do noone can answer this. Have you downloaded it ? Have you got an error from curl ? If you downloaded the script as described above, make it executable using chmode +x FILENAME and copy it somewhere in your PATH sudo mv FILENAME /usr/local/bin then you can run it in terminal. Or whatelse you mean ???

And encrypted DMG´s are also not save ... georgestarcher.com/?p=228 or Spartan and a nice dictionary file workes fine - but bruteforce attacks need some time.

This is only an example link that it works tuaw.com/2012/02/03/… it is not the topic here to show how. The Mac must be running and the key must be in memory - to get software (backdoors, trojans, ... ) on a Mac see google (but works fine using Adobe Flash).

Which OS version you had on your Mini 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 ... the recovery disc is a partition of the internal harddisk (only 10.7 and 10.8).
