comment Can I use Linux in a 2011 Macbook Pro with a defective discrete GPU?
Welcome to AskDifferent, please note that your answer should rather be a comment on the question. And thank you, I got mine fixed already but I managed to use it with Ubuntu until Apple decided to repair them.

comment Macbook Pro: How to disable discrete GPU permanently from EFI?
A solution to this question would also be useful to owners of 2011 MBP models that have a defective discrete GPU. It is certainly possible to disable the discrete GPU when using Linux, see my question here: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/168167/…

comment Is there a way to view and control the powerstate of the discrete GPU on a 2011 MBP in OSX?
Update: My MBP has fallen victim to the well known defect in the GPU in the 2011 models. It's not clear if it is a defect in the GPU itself or the result of a badly designed cooling system.

comment 2011 Macbook Pro - GPU dying?
How is your MBP holding up? Many users report that the logic board replacement is not a permanent solution and they have to keep replacing it.Mine failed a couple of weeks ago.

Another thing to try is booting from a clean install of OSX on an external USB disk.

A good answer would provide a tool or script to verify that the data being written to the SSD is not corrupted in any wat.

The question is about installation from USB, not from a DVD.

The question was about creating the USB installer, not installing to a USB disk. However, have you verified that this works to boot Windows from a Mac? In my experience this procedure works to create the USB installation but it won't boot on a Mac.
