I'm a book author, writing most often about Mac software. I've written dozens of computer books on subjects as diverse as Keynote, Microsoft Office, Quicken, and CSS. My bestselling books are JavaScript & Ajax for the Web: Visual QuickStart Guide, and Adobe Dreamweaver: Visual QuickStart Guide, both co-written with my wife, Dori Smith.
I've written for most of the Mac magazines, and I was a Contributing Editor for Macworld for about 15 years.
I live in Northern California's Wine Country with Dori and our excellent cat.

Why do movies sometime lag on my 15" MacBook Pro (2011)? @CajunLuke I can endorse this from recent experience. The BluRay player I just bought (the LG BD650) is DLNA-enabled, allowing it to stream video over the Gigabit Ethernet network from my NAS. The Apple TV, using the Plex Media Server running on another Mac, uses the server to transcode some video formats. Viewing the same video file, the BD650's hardware decoding gives me much better quality than the software decoding via the Apple TV. |

An alternative to the text editor TextMate for PHP development? "There is, however a slight learning curve..." Now that's hilarious. The emacs learning curve is legendary. See bc.tech.coop/blog/images/curves.jpg for a humorous illustration. |

What's a good graphical SFTP utility for OS X? I used Cyberduck for many years (couldn't see paying for an FTP client), then tried to use it to transfer several hundred files at once. It completely choked. Transmit handled the job with ease. |
