comment How can root launch a regular Mac application from a cron job in /etc/crontab?
You say 'UNIX-style solution' like it's a bad thing. IMO it's much easier to suspend these launches and resume them on demand by commenting and uncommenting the relevant line. I thought stackexchange wasn't the place for religious wars!

comment OS X breaks if I apply HFS compression to the whole volume. What do I need to exclude?
Thanks. I'm not familiar with /usr/standalone, which includes /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi but I would guess it shouldn't be compressed either.

comment How to fix DNS resolving issues on Mountain Lion after waking from sleep?
Good ways to troubleshoot this: on your FreeBSD router, - turn on DNS logging and review the logs using 'tail' and/or - run tcpdump e.g. sudo tcpdump -vv -i en1 port 53

comment Viber messenger not working on my Ad hoc wireless network
When you look at the iPhone's IP settings, what do you see? (click the arrow next to the network name in Settings..Wi-Fi) A screen shot would be ideal.

comment How can I reset the answers of the security questions of my Apple ID?
Jeff's answer is wrong. This one is right (I just added a missing step that may have tripped up Creator. I get the "Forgot your answers? Send reset security info email to..." message. (Or perhaps Jeff was treated differently because he was using a browser/from an IP he hadn't used with his Apple ID before.)

revised How to protect my Mac from reseting the admin password
Cleaned up grammar and added some info to the end; rm redundant link. Hope I'm not being to bold; this is my first edit to another person's answer.

If past performance is any indication of future success, it's likely that new flaws in FileVault will be found.

comment How secure is Mac OS X's security?
@D.W.: Re. "best practices": When answering, I started writing specifics, but decided it's probably best to simply say best practices, not re-answer. Others have done a good job already - with audit standards like ISO27001. gog.is/mac+os+x+security+best+practices shows the NSA's goo.gl/ineX4, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a separate Q&A or or even series of questions, perhaps at <security.stack...> where you are so busy. There's so much - e.g. what I cover at elvey.com/insecure , no one else is covering!

comment How secure is Mac OS X's security?
Thanks for the feedback. It looks like I tweaked my answer to make it clearer. Any further suggestions? Doh! I just realized that it was you who improved my answer. Yay. Still getting the hang of things on Stack sites, and/or they're changing. ('About' says I can't edit posts but I can - but my edits are moderated; you can edit my answer, but have <<2000 points...) Anyway, I guess the right thing to do now is to delete most of our comments, above? Interesting editing here...like Wikipedia, but not too much! :-) As for (not) being upset, NVC is helping me be better at that!
