Have you tried using an app like Disk Inventory X to see what takes up the space?

comment Merge all partitions back to single volume
Usually if Boot Camp Assistant refuses to merge partitions, there's corruption in the primary GPT table, and the backup is used. I'd recommend taking a Time Machine backup and repartitioning the entire disk from recovery.

comment Bootcamp Installation Space
@DavidAnderson on my system the recovery partition loads an image into RAM as disk1s1, and mounts this as root. This allows disk0 to be unmounted. You're right about needing to check MBR as well if you use hybrid disks.

The local recovery partition, cmd+R on boot. It allows disk0 to be unmounted so it's enough.

comment How can I back up my iphone if my touch screen is broken?
When you connect you iPhone to a new device, you have to accept the connection as trusted on the phone, which the OP can't do if the touch screen is completely broken. This solution would work only with a previously authorized computer.

comment Install El Capitan in Virtual Box for testing purposes
@smoooosher Actually Apple's SLA allows you to virtualize OSX on Apple hardware, so as long as the host is a Mac, it's allowed. "you are granted a [...] license: [...] to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that is already running the Apple Software, for purposes of: (a) software development; (b) testing during software development; (c) using OS X Server; or (d) personal, non-commercial use."
