comment What are pros and cons for MacPorts, Fink and Homebrew?
As a remark on the differing number of packages: Homebrew decidedly does not include packages for programming languages which have their own packaging system (rubygems/pip/cpan…) or for software for which an arguably more appropriate OS X installer is available (MacTeX). Also, duplicates and older versions are not in the default repo but includes in alternate tap repos. Compare this to macports, which, eg contains an IPython port for all included Python versions. It is kind of a different philosophy which naturally increases the number of packages in macports.

comment Phone-only mode on iPhone
@DanJ True (I was aware of that in general but not in detail – thanks for the link btw) but I am exactly concerned about those few apps which may indeed run indefinitely. Those who have (maybe mistakenly) GPS activated while running in the background or are somewhat listening for incoming connections like in the Skype example. These are the ones which I fear may drain the battery without giving me a chance to find out that they are actually doing so.

And I would have to close all background applications manually as well to extend the battery life as much as possible…

comment The iPhone is over 3 times more expensive than the iPod touch, how much more margin is Apple doing on the iPhone?
If the design costs had already been recouped with the iPhone by the time the iPod touch was released, then why did the price for an iPhone not drop similarly once this was achieved? That’s not really a good argument. The iPod touch could have a completely different design and still it would be sold for way less than an iPhone. (At least that’s how the market works currently.)

comment How to add characters to the press and hold character picker in OS X Lion?
‘Input Methods’, ‘PressAndHold.app’…? It couldn’t have been any more obvious.

comment Deleted /Library/Python folder. Is it possible restore?
System relevant data (such as the Python standard library) is almost never stored in /Library/. /Library is for user-installed additional stuff.

comment Deleted /Library/Python folder. Is it possible restore?
Everything you install via easy_install or pip will go there. The Python standard library is in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/lib/python2.7.

comment Reasons to prefer Little Snitch over the built-in firewall
Yeah, I also think the blocking of outgoing connections is probably the key point for many. (But I still suspect many just use it out of habit because they don’t know about the incoming blocking feature of the ipfw.)
