I'm a freelance software developer in Los Angeles. My work focuses primarily on RIAs and games using Flash and Flex although I've been exploring other platforms such as iPhone and XNA (for XBox).

comment iPhone 2G has “NO SERVICE” after restore from possibly corrupt backup
Apple store was no help. They tried to sell me a new iPhone 2G for $200. I used Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 and managed to revive the mobile service to my phone!

Thanks Martín. Seeing as how I have two bricked phones now I'm sure I'll end up with only one of them being fixed (at best). In that case, I'll probably jailbreak one of them and try it out. I'm hoping the Apple Store guys will spare me the sales pitch and do what's right but I'm not holding my breath.

A friend of mine just told me the same thing happened to him. He went to the apple store and ultimately got a replacement iphone from them. Not good news but it's the next step for me.

I'm also getting an error in iTunes stating "iTunes could not check for an update to the carrier settings for your iPhone. An unknown error occurred (1631)." I understand that this is a common error as of late with the iPad but I haven't found any info about it regarding the iPhone.

Update: I tried putting it into "Recovery Mode" followed by "DFU Mode" but to no avail. iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
