comment MacBook Pro camera and microphone used by malware?
The article shows a way to use the camera without activating the LED light. Obviously you need to put tape over the camera.

comment iPhone not connecting to 3G after losing wifi connection
@man-qa: Which iOS version are you running? I have experienced many types of problems similar to the ones you describe on my iPhone 5 iOS6. Those were gone once I upgraded to iOS7.

Are you using iOS7? I have not had any problems since upgrading from iOS6.

After upgrading the phone to iOS7, the problem is gone. This further strenghens the case that this is an iOS6 issue.

comment iPhone 5 non-responsive when ringing
@Thecafremo: I have tried pushing every visible UI element when the device has entered non-responsive mode to try to provoke some kind of response from the phone, but to no avail. These elements are all located in the lower area.

Good idea. That should be the default sound setting. A cam cover should come as standard. The tape works but the downside is it makes you look paranoid. People think this is a non-issue but AFAIK many malware attacks have used mic/cam to collect sensitive information/spying.

Thanks, great info, Wondering though for how long the green light is on. I guess long enough to notice it.

comment iOS 6 activation error on iPhone 3GS without SIM card
There are legitimate users who wish to upgrade old iPhones without SIM cards. An old iPhone without SIM card can be used for many purposes; camera, calculator, for taking notes etc.

Thanks. You're probably right, just wish Apple could have used a more comprehensible error message. I'll try to find a SIM from the carrier and update this question when I got news. Hopefully the device will unlock itself.

Maybe a SIM card is required for the upgrade not to crash the phone?

Thanks, but the phone is just stuck at an "Activation Error" screen so there is no way I can access settings. Seems I'll just have to leave the phone to a repair shop.

comment Is my Mac spying on me?
@demianturner: Noted that there are generic web cam covers for sale at Amazon that are so thin that you can close the laptop. Call me paranoid, but at $5.95 it could be a wise investment.

comment Is my Mac spying on me?
@Mahnax: I would have wanted the Mac to come with a piece of draggable plastic that would cover the camera instead of having to fiddle with post-its. And even if one covers the camera, the microphone could be secretly recording any conversations in the vicinity of the Mac.

@demianturner: Interesting. So maybe the green light isn't hardwired after all. I also thought about snapshots, they are taken so quickly that you won't notice the green light (if it is even activated). And a malware snapshot may be just as harmful as a video. I wonder if Apple has stated something about this, because this is, in my opinion, a significant security issue for Mac users.

@Corey Edwards: It seems like the green light claim is disputed. See comment from demianturner. It would be interesting to find an article on how to actually remove the Kext files, and then put them back when the need arises.

Sensible thoughts. I'd say the biggest risks lie in things like Java bugs and Flash bugs. Flash has access to both camera and microphone. Good to know that the green light is hardwired.

@lhf Well, for instance see pcworld.com/article/228251/…: "AppleCare technicians are seeing an explosion of malware issues."

comment How to mute bootup sound?
Gave it another shot, it didn't work. Seemed like the mute box setting was lost upon reboot. Disappointed, I then toggled the mute checkbox a couple of times, dragged the sound volume slider and clicked the lock icon to protect the settings from being changed. Voilà! That finally worked, rebooted twice with loud regular volume setting with no boot sound! I was too quick to conclude that the program doesn't work.
