Have you considered quoting your $compName variable on the off chance it's being interpreted as an option? Try: scutil --set LocalHostName "$compName"

You seem to be posting an answer and not asking a question. It's okay to post both an answer and a question at the same time, but the answer should appear in the answer section, not in the question itself. For more information on how Ask Different and the StackExchange Q&A format works please see our FAQ.

The problem is the $ in the first awk statement -- what are you trying to achieve with that that whole awk -F $'\t' '{print $8, $9}'? Are you really expecting your field separator to be a dollar sign followed by a tab character? Or are you trying to use $ to denote the start of the line?

comment How do I delete unlinked folders from iCloud.com
This isn't really a useful answer. Can you elaborate on how it was solved? If someone else found your question because they had the same problem, could you leave behind something that would guide them to a solution? Should they talk to Apple support? Make a Genius Bar appointment? Power it off and on again?

comment Terminal Command: List admin account
@njboot this is incorrect. You can inspect the sudo setup on an OS X machine to convince yourself of this. If you do sudo visudo you will see that elevated privs are available to accounts in the %admin group, not %staff. That makes the admin group the group you need to be in to administer an OS X machine.
