I'm a grad-student in Astrophysics, focusing on theory, and generally studying high-energy transients.

That sounds like a semantic argument: you can't support x11 because the VT100 in the paleolithic exhibit that it emulates doesn't do that... since it is an emulator - presumably it can do more. Let me rearrange words to make them less offensive to you, is there a reason why an x11-terminal-emulator can't be as good as a 'normal' terminal emulator, full question?

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. But at the same time, xquartz is just a terminal which also supports x11... so it seems like it would be better to add x11 support to terminal, than to entirely reproduce a (much worse) terminal-emulator with x11

@Buscar웃 to a different assortment of characters/symbols (e.g. greek characters, mathematical symbols, etc). This is the current mapping (thus I assume default).

comment sync mail folders between desktop and iphone
Thanks @Tony, I was hoping to avoid this solution - but, indeed, it may be the only one. And doesn't sound too bad.

@zelanix yes, and it still doesn't adequately address OS X

Thanks @bmike, it does answer my immediate issues, but I'd still be curious if anyone has compiled a more complete/exhaustive description.
