It does seem to be dead now and the last version I had had some issues. I would look elsewhere but can't recommend anything specific.

FYI, the special requirement of Time Machine over LAN is certain AFP features, not hardlinks (it always uses a sparsebundle so hardlinks are hidden from the server). The specific requirements are listed here. A server running OS X should support all these features but might fail to advertise or be detected as Time Machine-capable.

Can you try disabling SMB sharing? Some people have suggested it might make a difference.

comment Can I use my Macbook Pro Retina as extra monitor for my iMac through Thunderbolt
That's a shame. I had hoped that display traffic wouldn't encounter the same problems as file transfer, since they behave a bit differently.

comment Unix command to recursively copy JPG files in a complex directory tree
Huh, are you sure? I don't get that result here. Maybe the other files already exist in the destination directory? rsync won't remove them unless you add --delete-excluded (to be really clear, that would delete all files from the destination folder, except the ones ending in RNav.jpg).

I think "severe security issue" is an overreaction. If someone is logged into the computer, it's generally assumed that they're allowed to access the computer. I know Linux can be configured to deny remote users access to some hardware but it's uncommon and I'm not sure if it even extends to webcams.
