Make sure you have write access to that network volume/directory/file. Also, I would be very surprised if tagging worked for FAT or NTFS remote volumes. I would also be surprised if tagging worked when the remote volume is shared via SMB.

Your edit says it happens on both the local network and external network, but the way you formatted it suggests you intended otherwise. Can you clarify?

Bootcamp still works, right? If you boot into Windows what does Window report as the filesystem type?
