Trained as a Geologist only to discover that there was no job opportunity waiting for me.

Instead found my way back to computing after spending my formative years plugging away on Sinclair Spectrum's and Commadore Amigas.

Hack together Database Applications for a SME construction company, with the intention that I can stop our engineers spending all their time thinking up spreadsheets of information that we already have.

Oops. If I turn off Match and switch to Manually manage then iTunes tries to delete the tracks but the reappear next time. Nothing is selected on the Music tab of the iPhone settings.

Router is a Netgear Prosafe. Mac Adress is listed in the router as identified, speed as 0. I can't see the list of leases on the router. We have 3 routers all with the same name on each floor of the office. My phone was working fine until about 2 weeks ago.

Seems to be fine in that respect - set to expire after 24 hours, and "new" devices join no problem...

comment Is iBooks Author suitable for producing poetry?
There's a lot of discussion around that EULA at the moment but the consensus seems to be that it covers the "iBook" that you create, and not the content of the book, which you could sell in a different format elsewhere.

comment Zoom level in Pages 09 not WYSIWYG?
Sorry - my bad. By "Full Page" view I'm talking in this respect about the 10.7 "Full Screen" mode. In Pages this blacks out all the screen that is not the "page" removing distractions. If the Zoom is set to "Full Width" then page width is >200%.

The screen's wide enough for portrait A4 width, which would be good enough for the checking I need to do...

Good solution, unless you're using the Full Page view to remove distractions, in which case Zoom ends up 200%+ when setting to Fit Width... Looks like I'm working at 150% for the time being.

I understand that. What used to be great (when I were a lad...) about the mac was that Mac OS was always 72 dpi, hence things were much more predictable. That said with Apples control of the whole widget they should be able to get Pages to find the PPI of the particular Macbook...

In my experience there are usually scaling artefacts present even with true WYSYWIG editors. At 100%, if the page on screen is the same size as the output document, I can accurately trust line weight, text position, etc.

I would assume that at 100% zoom the width on screen would be the width of the selected output paper. At 100% What I See is not What I Get

comment Why is iOS 5 draining my battery so fast?
This was certainly the solution for me for drain whilst "sleeping". I'm still getting visible drain when the screen is active though and am about 10-15% short at the end of the day than I'd expect/

comment Peripherals with Great Mac Compatibility
Fair enough - but I think that Macros and extra buttons fall under the esoteric functions mentioned in my comment. :) I wouldn't expect those to work in Windows without installing specific drivers.
