comment How to use iTunes Match with two user accounts on the same computer?
Wow! It worked! How arbitrary... I wonder why Apple made things work this way? It's a total pain, but thank goodness you posted this answer. Otherwise I would have made some totally convoluted script or something to try to sync my iTunes library on to another computer and have it automatically update or something ridiculous like that, and it probably would've taken hours and hours and wouldn't have ever worked anyway. Thanks! :-)

I've thought about this, but iTunes needs to stay open in order to have iTunes match run in the background and upload any new music. I don't think iTunes can handle live updates to the music library. I could have it periodically quit and relaunch iTunes when the libraries get synced, but that interrupts the iTunes Match process, and for whatever reason, it takes forever for it to fully match any new music. Sometimes as long as a couple of days.

I did look into that, actually. It seems family sharing does not include iTunes Match, so unfortunately it's no help here.

Just tried renaming a couple of my folders that had missing files. No dice -- Time Machine still isn't backing them up.

I did take that into account. For whatever reason the files not being backed up are truly scattered all over the place. In some cases there is a parent folder not being backed up, but in most cases it's scattered files throughout a lower level folder like ~/Library. I could get Time Machine to back them up by renaming the lower level folders, but frankly I want to use a backup option that I can actually rely on, so I'm just going to switch to something else.

Thanks for the suggestion. After running tmutil compare -n I can see that there's a LOT of files not being backed up scattered all over my hard drive. I could try to rename some of the folders but it'd be a huge pain, and some of them are important system folders like /Library. I think this is the final nail in the coffin for Time Machine -- I'll have to use something else for my local backups. Which is a pity, because Time Machine's interface is really nice.

comment How to launch a GUI application in another user's graphical session?
Oddly enough, the app's dock icon appears in foo's session, but the app window appears in bar's. So that doesn't seem to work, but good suggestion. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that secure login is enabled in the situation I need this, which is for an installer.

comment How do I prevent my iPhone from getting alerts when using Messages on my Mac?
Yes. I hadn't thought of using different accounts, but I'd like to be able to receive messages sent to me on both devices, otherwise I might miss something, or my friends will get confused about which one to use.
