comment Are there any up-to-date rsync frontends or similar for OSX?
@patrix Thanks. I've looked a bit more closely at CCC's options and made some edits to clarify.

@Calaf I think Chris2u means draw the diagonal line using Tools > Annotate > Line. Then cmd-a helps to make a selection starting at top left, and you can move the bottom right along the marked diagonal.

Can you give a before-and-after example? Eg what did option-shift-o do previously?

Thanks! Hold on a sec: I'm just writing an answer that might help.

I'm confused about two things -- could you clarify? 1) I think your diff command is comparing the Size and Wired columns from the kextstat output. I agree that Size is "allocated memory", but I don't think Wired is "expected to be allocated" (man kextstat describes it as "The number of wired bytes of kernel memory that the kext occupies"). 2) Are you seeing the discrepancy between Size and Wired when you have the issue with Preview?

comment Cannot cleanup OS X trash
@zwaldowski @caarlos0 Ok, another idea. If there isn't a cyclic reference, there will be a finite number of confdir-14B--- directories. I believe rm removes directories by going to the most deeply nested directory, removing all files there, then the directory, then ascending up to the next level and onwards to the top. So in the path a/b/c/d, the removal order would be d, c, b, a. In the shell, can you descend to the deepest level using cd, and try this manually? Or perhaps this is due to filesystem corruption as @zwaldowski suggests and backup/restore is the best option...

Perhaps you have a copy of Sketch on the external hard drive somewhere? You could try plugging the drive back in and repeat the Spotlight search. If you see it, try asking Spotlight for the exact location (on 10.9, one way to do this is to move the mouse over the search result, then hold alt and cmd... sorry, I don't know how to do this on 10.10). So perhaps this might answer your questions 2 and 3. I don't know about question 1, sorry!

Interesting! Ok, I'd suggest this: 1) look at the inode numbers using ls -li -- if there is a cyclic reference, we should see the same inode number repeatedly; 2) BACK UP before trying any "fix", just in case; 3) remove the file by inode number, using find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -inum [inode number] -delete.

When you had the issue, did you have any external drives plugged in, or mounted via the network?

Can you run sudo ls -lR /Users/carlos/.Trash/Previous\ System/private/tmp/coreutils20150707-43005-1i8nk3t/coreutils-8.24 and paste the output here, please? If the output is very long, give us the first 10 lines or so. I think that confdir-14B--- may be (hard?) linked to itself, so rm gets stuck in a loop whilst removing it.

comment Why does mdworker segfault when scanning files owned by root?
Assuming you have some third party apps installed, here's one idea. Try "split half" on /Applications – ie move half the apps elsewhere temporarily, rebuild the index and see if it fails... if it fails, the issue is in those apps that remain: repeat the process until you've narrowed it down (hopefully) one specific app. (Writing in a rush: sorry if this is unclear...)

comment How can I have more than 16 keyboard shortcuts for Spaces (i.e., Mission Control)
Thanks @mjturner - good point! I've just rebooted and retested. The changes have persisted, but sadly ctrl-alt-6 still does nothing.

@NilsHaldenwang The reports should be visible in /Applications/Utilities/Console.app, I think under User Diagnostic Reports or System Diagnostic Reports.

It might be helpful to see the rest of the crash report (it contains some details of what the various threads in the app were doing when you force quit it).
