comment External Apple USB keyboard, Shift+Tab and Command+Shift+Tab doesn't work
If you look at what keys the Mac "thinks" are pressed using the Keyboard Viewer, what do you see? (In System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard, turn on "Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar", then at the top of the screen, choose "Show Keyboard Viewer" from the menu item that has just appeared.)

comment How to export all emails from a mailbox in Apple Mail
As far as I remember, the each separate message starts the same way, perhaps with a line starting with "From ", or ">From "? TextEdit.app shows a count of the number of matches at the right of the search box when you use the Find feature. It's a little more tricky to get it to match "[start of line]From", but I think you can do this using the "Insert Pattern" menu option (click the magnifying glass at the left of the search box).

comment How to export all emails from a mailbox in Apple Mail
1) I think the Archive folder that @Buscar웃 is referring to is a Gmail feature, but perhaps you aren't using Gmail? 2) You may be able to open the .mbox file in a text editor and see how many emails it actually contains: that way you can tell if the problem is Mail.app's export, or Thunderbird's import.

comment Intermittent Static / Garbage External Display On Wake and Boot? Picture included
I use a workaround on my setup which is quicker (and less destructive to window positioning) than unplug / replug. Instead, I press ctrl-shift-eject to put the displays to sleep, then wake them up again by pressing shift a few seconds later. Mostly this resolves the issue for me, although sometimes I have to do this twice. Although perhaps I don't have quite the same problem: I'm using a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 with Apple's Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor, and although I see this static on wake intermittently, I can still see the Mac display through it somewhat.

comment Can't run Apple Hardware Test as Mac crashes
Try ejecting the DVD, and instead hold alt-d at startup. On some machines (not sure what the criteria is) I've found that this downloads AHT over the Internet.

comment Can't run Apple Hardware Test as Mac crashes
Are you sure you are using the correct AHT DVD for that machine? I think I've seen similar behaviour when using the wrong version...

comment Most-efficient way to copy iPhoto events between computers?
@craig Is there a typo in the question? It reads "I want to preserve... on computer B, but copy... from computer B". I was expecting one of those to be "computer A". Can you clarify?

comment Forward or Bcc a copy of all outgoing mail
@sam, thanks! I've accepted your edit (after making it fit my style of writing). I've added a warning about the new suggestion, though: I think this could be a good way to shoot yourself in the foot in certain circumstances. Caveat emptor!

Hi @sam - I've found another way of doing this... please see my (hugely) revised answer.

comment Temperature logger compatible with Mac?
Thanks - I hadn’t found that product. It looks well designed, and it is good to have native Mac software. But 1) it doesn’t run independently: it needs to be connected to a computer to operate, and I don’t have one near the fridge, and 2) it is more than twice the price of the RC-4. More suggestions welcome.

comment Are OS X installs specific to a machine type?
A few questions raised by your answer, though: 1) I wonder if non-retina resources are installed on a retina Mac? (I don't own one yet.) 2) I like your iMac / MacBook Pro example. I think you imply that the code for the new iMac would be embedded in 10.9.3, so if you were to update the MacBook Pro to that release, you could then run the iMac from it… do I understand right?

comment Are OS X installs specific to a machine type?
Thanks: this is a useful clarification of the difference between the specificity of the install media and the install itself. Also, the advice about making sure the install is newer than the Mac is practical and useful. It’s a shame about the hedging (“… for the most part…”) in this answer. Perhaps it just isn’t possible to give a full answer here: I guess Apple can cause the installer to create customised results and we can just offer our experience about whether we have observed them doing so.

comment Are OS X installs specific to a machine type?
Thanks, @Buscar웃 - that's what I would guess too, but I have used tricks like this in the past (eg the Mac Pro / MacBook Pro one from my list) and they seemed to work in my limited testing, so perhaps the installer actually produces generic results. Or generic results, except in certain edge cases: and that's what I'd like to know about.

comment Are OS X installs specific to a machine type?
That's a nice idea: thanks! But that only tells me about those two machines. I'm after a more general answer if possible.
