@DanielLawson Looks like Study Island is mostly likely studyisland.com, but I don't see a relevant "Plato" site.

comment Why is Automator not working with Spotlight Search?
What format is the external HD? I think certain formats don't work with Spotlight, eg possibly NTFS, although I'm not certain about this...

Ah, thanks: are you perhaps missing /System/Library/Extensions/corecrypto.kext?

OK, here's a different idea... what does sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext; sudo kextutil -print-diagnostics -verbose 6 /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext show?

Apple's man page for kextload says "For most kexts, kextload must run as the superuser (root). Kexts installed under /System/ with an OSBundleAllowUserLoad property set to true may be loaded via kextload by non-root users." So I'm wondering if that property has somehow been changed on your Mac Pro. On my 10.8.4 system, cat /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext/Contents/Info.plist shows a line <key>OSBundleAllowUserLoad</key> followed by <true/>. What does that show on your Mac Pro?

comment How to launch a GUI application in another user's graphical session?
I think one piece of this puzzle might involve the -psn command line argument, which the OS adds in some situations. I've encountered this in the past when working on porting some code to OS X. See this question and the Apple documentation it references.

Also, I wonder about the app itself... md5 /System/Library/CoreServices/NotificationCenter.app/Contents/MacOS/NotificationC‌enter gives me MD5 (/System/Library/CoreServices/NotificationCenter.app/Contents/MacOS/Notification‌Center) = 86556e797fa0f12d01affed3f5fd338d.

What output do you get from md5 /System/Library/CoreServices/NotificationCenter.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/‌MainMenu.nib? I get MD5 (/System/Library/CoreServices/NotificationCenter.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj‌/MainMenu.nib) = 0b2f3a46a02c54333ad0d6a69d40e970 on my machine (10.8.4).

Great! If the answer was useful, would you consider voting on it and accepting it? (See What should I do when someone answers my question?). This'll help others who might have the same question in the future.

How many buses are involved? I'd guess that the limit you've reached is due to the bus.

comment Cursor stuttering: “IOHIDSystem cursor update overdue. Resending.”
Ah, thank you @JorisVanhecke. I was wondering how Transmit might cause an issue at the kernel layer... Transmit Disk (MacFUSE) sounds like a plausible explanation (presumably some part of that does actually run in the kernel, despite the Filesystem in UserSpacE name?). When I get a chance, I'll experiment and see if removing it helps me.
