comment Is alarm vibration suddenly broken in iOS 7?
One possibility I can think of that could cause this issue to appear on multiple phones, independent of iOS updates: do they all use the same iCloud account? Clock.app doesn't in theory use iCloud, so this idea is ridiculous really, but it's one thing I can think of that might be common to all your phones...

Thanks for the details. I can't reproduce this, I'm afraid. Here's what I did: iPhone 4S running 7.0.2. Created new alarm, with the following settings. Time: in a min or two; Repeat: Never; Label: Alarm; Sound: a custom ringtone sound I have on the phone already (this isn't silent, though); Snooze: on. In Settings > Sounds, I have Vibrate on Ring: on; Vibrate on Silent: on. In Settings > Do Not Disturb, Manual: off; Scheduled: off. Ringer switch (on the side above the volume controls) is set to silent. When the alarm went off, I heard the custom sound, and the phone vibrated.

3) I think Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings would be worth a try: I'm hoping this would remove Clock.app's preferences. But... only do this if you are comfortable with data loss: unfortunately I don't know what else this resets (Apple's PDF iPhone manual just unhelpfully says "All your preferences and settings are reset").

How strange! A few ideas... 1) Does the phone vibrator hardware still work (eg when you receive a call)? 2) You say this happened without having performed an iOS update, but I see you mention 7.0.2, which is fairly recent. Can you confirm the iOS 7.0.2 update didn't break vibration for you, at least initially?

comment Moving individual Mailbox to external drive
Thanks for trying that idea out. Here's another idea: instead of using Finder, let's try opening it within Mail.app. This app doesn't allow you to select a file with File > Open. But it does have File > Import Mailboxes. So I'd suggest: try File > Import Mailboxes, and choose /Volumes/External HD/MyArchive.mbox. This will import it again (I don't think this will overwrite anything, but make sure you have a good backup first). I'm hoping you can then remove the unwanted import, but the sandbox will remember that you selected that folder, and allow Mail to continue to have access to it.

comment 50Hz hum from macbook air headphone port
Some people can't feel the tingling sensation. What country are you in? I don't know much about European plugs (I'm in the UK) but I can see at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_power_plugs_and_sockets that certain European connectors have earth pins on the side of the round plug (see eg en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schuko_plug_and_socket.png). Of course this is just an idea of mine: I might be incorrect, but I'm thinking that grounding your Mac would reduce the hum.

Is there perhaps something wrong with the fonts in your normal user account? I think Lucida Grande is used in title bars... perhaps this has become corrupt.

comment Find my Mac: “Online, no location available”
Hi... you've done most of the things I can think of to isolate this already, so I'm grabbing at straws. 1) Does anything show in Console.app on the MacBook Air when you look for that machine at iCloud.com? 2) If you take the MacBook Air to another WiFi network (friend's house, coffee shop...), is the behaviour the same?

comment How to enable fast user switching when Login Options are disabled?
Apple published some OS X Security Configuration Guides. I can't find one for 10.8, but the one for 10.6 has a script (on page 253) that includes the comment "Disable fast user switching", followed by sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences MultipleSessionEnabled -bool NO. Perhaps try that with -bool YES? Oh: also, here is a similar question with no answers.

comment Apple OS Update and SSD failed last time I tried
Welcome Bryan! I can't see the exact cause here so can't reassure whether safe to update to Mountain Lion (or perhaps Mavericks soon?). But I do have a suggestion for troubleshooting a hang on blue screen: try booting in verbose mode (see Apple's HT1492 document)... the last line printed before the hang may indicate the problem (or it might be a red herring, but it's worth a try...)

Just an idea: in the Finder, try double-clicking an .emlx file within /Volumes/External HD/MyArchive.mbox/. I suspect this might be a way to convince the sandbox that Mail is allowed to access at least that message, and perhaps the whole folder.

Sorry if something in the answer didn't make sense, @Buscar웃. Thanks for the replies, wyred. Given you've reduced the icons down to just Apple-provided ones, the only remaining possibility I can think of is that you've run into an Apple bug -- sorry to hear that. I'll edit my answer with a little more thought, for what it's worth.

Thanks. Sounds like it isn't solely a video issue, then (although it might be a fault with the video causing the rest of the machine to lock up). You say it was checked in a store but they couldn't find the issue. Is the machine under warranty?
