A writer on Macs since I first saw a Powerbook. Bought one the next day--and many portables since. Plus now the iPhone and iPad. Picked up a lot of owner-fixes over the years, knowledge that used to be more common and less "procedural" - I understand why Apple has had to formalize it's methods, but this is still a system you can control, repair and maintain as deeply as you want to go.

I see a lot of questions from people afraid of their machines--and a lot that a moment's googling could answer. Both are symptoms of user disempowerment. I'm not sure, in the end, that Apple Geniuses have been all that helpful to both the image and reality of Macs as a user-friendly computing environment. They don't know anything you can't easily know yourself.

comment Mavericks+: (Desktop Wallpaper) How can I use both the Apple Desktop Pictures and a local folder?
Or move the ones in /Library to your User Library, where you won’t run in to permissions snags.

How about saving each mail to PDF and then combine (drag & drop) them into one PDF and print?

It should. It does and it will. Do you have something running like, say, Hazel, or Desktop Utility?

comment Font Book says multiple copies are installed
i should have added, check on the default fonts for your system, be sure no others are in that folder, and remove any not in the list. Delete - by hand is fine, or move to your user fonts.

comment Avoid download 100.000 mails from gmail when using Apple Mail
Open Mail preferences and look at the Advanced pane of your account. Where it says, "Remove Copy From Server" it doesn't mean to your computer, it means delete from server, period. Erased. So it's a "convenience" you don't have to use.

comment OS X Mavericks lost my mail folders!
Previously, the only way to get even your own current mail folders / boxes back into Mail was to Import, one by one. Then Move the emails into the appropriate folders/mailboxes. Perhaps that still works.

comment Restore functionality of Escape key in Finder (Mavericks)
No kidding! Sounds nice, but I've never, in many years, seen or heard of this … in Finder. In some apps, yes, but ...

comment Has Mountain Lion broken the ability to show Desktop with a gesture, begin dragging an icon, and unshow the Desktop?
But before gestures and swiping, holding an icon over a hidden window where you wanted to drop, revealed that window. No more?

comment Positioning desktop icons on the left instead of right
Q is asking about the automatic Clean Up By and Sort By choices, I believe, in the Finder View menu--and that would be kind of cool. Why only arrange to the right?

comment Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable
I don't have the dev problem, and it was an iPad, but after following these and many, many other support pages and Discussion suggestions, including fooling with hosts file ...the step that immediately worked was: Use a different computer. Went right through.

comment Upgraded to iOS 7 “Could not activate phone”
This is exactly the sort of thing that baffles reps at all levels ... so you scour the web and read and read and finally some guy says, Use a different computer. Mess with hosts file? All sorts of tweaks like that. I'm just saying, try another, it simply worked!

You can do this, but doesn't stick. Not at all.

Sorry, I meant prudent in that said files are uploaded and downloaded, so file size and bandwidth are certainly a factor.

comment How do I diagnose non-operational external USB3 hard disk drives?
And does this disk show up in Disk Utilities? I have to say, I've had this happen from one different MBPro to the next; some portables like a USB to mini USB ... have no answers yet except treasure the combo of disk and cable that works.

comment Cannot connect to Wi-Fi (The Wi-Fi network “network name” requires a WPA2 password)
Just a note that several times now, people have been subsequently able to connect to my WPA-secure wireless network after I opened the Guest Network, no password. Hell if I know why, but it worked.

comment 2011 Macbook Pro - GPU dying?
The same as my reasoning for buying it. Expensive to fix, and laptops get thrown arond alot. Old days, for a Powerbook I didn't. Lot of independents who would repair. I wouldn't buy a Porsche without some kind of warranty, either.

No harm, ever, in changing your Apple ID password. I'd do it in this case, or anything doubtful / suspicious - and have.

comment No Wifi Connection on Macbook Air
Sometimes opening the Guest Network, with no password, works in that subsequently, the machine can connect normally.
