A writer on Macs since I first saw a Powerbook. Bought one the next day--and many portables since. Plus now the iPhone and iPad. Picked up a lot of owner-fixes over the years, knowledge that used to be more common and less "procedural" - I understand why Apple has had to formalize it's methods, but this is still a system you can control, repair and maintain as deeply as you want to go.

I see a lot of questions from people afraid of their machines--and a lot that a moment's googling could answer. Both are symptoms of user disempowerment. I'm not sure, in the end, that Apple Geniuses have been all that helpful to both the image and reality of Macs as a user-friendly computing environment. They don't know anything you can't easily know yourself.

comment make new Finder windows open at current folder
Actually, at least on 10.8.3, Command-O opens a new Finder window. As does Command-N, so what the heck is up with that?

By making a Saved Search - which you can then drag to the Finder Sidebar if wanted. Or download the free and excellent EasyFind from DevonTechnologies, which will find anything anywhere.

comment Trackpad gesture that minimizes all windows?
Did you ever install MagicPrefs or anything like it? Have you looked through Launch Agents and Launch Demons in both Libraries? Login Items?

comment Is there a way to copy the link URL in Safari (Mac OS X) without using right click?
The Mac still relies on Drag and Drop, though a lot of this remains unspoken. Having two open app windows visible—-Safari and Mail, for example--allows drag and drop of not only links but images and sometimes text selections. Sometimes dropping on the Desktop as intermediate step--but experiment!

You can do this with 3rd-party window-management apps, check out Mac App Store or MacUpdate.

And you can always try removing the scanner (and printer) from the Print and Scan Preferences Pane and re-adding it. Also trashing any preferences files.

comment Reason why applications aren't stored in the Home-Folder?
Users have access to /Applications. They can also have aliases galore in ~/Applications. But all Apple apps do want to live in /Applications, that's where updaters will look.

comment Any way on God's green earth to disable resuming applications after a crash?
Something's not happening, here, with your maintenance/repair routines. My long experience on several iterations of MBPro is that hard crashes are not usual. Ever. In fact, hard crashes pretty much ended with the WallStreet. Except for that 15" PB lemon years ago, Apple replaced its motherboard repeatedly. Do you get kernel panics? This can all be fixed ...
