A writer on Macs since I first saw a Powerbook. Bought one the next day--and many portables since. Plus now the iPhone and iPad. Picked up a lot of owner-fixes over the years, knowledge that used to be more common and less "procedural" - I understand why Apple has had to formalize it's methods, but this is still a system you can control, repair and maintain as deeply as you want to go.

I see a lot of questions from people afraid of their machines--and a lot that a moment's googling could answer. Both are symptoms of user disempowerment. I'm not sure, in the end, that Apple Geniuses have been all that helpful to both the image and reality of Macs as a user-friendly computing environment. They don't know anything you can't easily know yourself.

Serious question: why would anybody not buy AppleCare for a new and expensive machine? Good luck, and let us know.

Also note that there are other ways to accomplish this. iMessage comes to mind. I use DropBox LAN Sync, haven't test speed but oh so just works. And other third-party, DropCopy, more ...

comment Any way on God's green earth to disable resuming applications after a crash?
Something's not happening, here, with your maintenance/repair routines. My long experience on several iterations of MBPro is that hard crashes are not usual. Ever. In fact, hard crashes pretty much ended with the WallStreet. Except for that 15" PB lemon years ago, Apple replaced its motherboard repeatedly. Do you get kernel panics? This can all be fixed ...

Or, you could use Yahoo POP mail. I find POP easier to manage than IMAP.

p.s. Keep your Keychains handy by checking the box in Preferences to Show Status in Menubar.

It's not normal for accountsd to ask. If Keychain Repair doesn't fix this, let us know.

comment Mac Mail won't connect to Exchange 2007
Have you tried deleting that entry from the login keychain? Trashing Mail preferences file? Am assuming Restarts between trial fixes. too. And that you've run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, too.

comment Have: Single partition firewire HD w/ 10.5.8 (my StartUp Disk), 2 bootable USB drives (1st= 10.6.7, 2nd= 10.8.2). Want: upgrade firewire HD to 10.8.2
I would just--temporarily, at least--copy those files you don't want to lose over to your machine, erase, verify + repair (run Disk Utility, and Disk Warrior if you have it) the FW HD and do a fresh install of 10.8 - then applying updates. Of course, that ignores your constraint, but drag and drop would take but minutes. And this is so much cleaner than installing over.

comment My fiance's iPhone 4 is still running on iOS 5, now that 6.1.3 has been released can I upgrade her to 6.1.2 so she can use evasion?
It's not much of a stuck, though. Unless you need a fix for the Exchange bug, you're fine sitting at 6.1.2.
