A writer on Macs since I first saw a Powerbook. Bought one the next day--and many portables since. Plus now the iPhone and iPad. Picked up a lot of owner-fixes over the years, knowledge that used to be more common and less "procedural" - I understand why Apple has had to formalize it's methods, but this is still a system you can control, repair and maintain as deeply as you want to go.

I see a lot of questions from people afraid of their machines--and a lot that a moment's googling could answer. Both are symptoms of user disempowerment. I'm not sure, in the end, that Apple Geniuses have been all that helpful to both the image and reality of Macs as a user-friendly computing environment. They don't know anything you can't easily know yourself.

comment Is there an app available from the App Store (iOS) to find out the LAN speed?
A little OT, maybe, but I just boosted my iPad and iPhone LAN to full bars - used to crap out only two rooms away in small house - newish AEBX - by propping a largish strainer behind it -- then added a second one behind that, turned slightly, which also blocked out a lot of neighbor's signal. Anecdotal but real, and no purchase necessary.

Mark, sorry I did not get that. You were looking for someone to expand on Apple's info ...? 'K.

comment Understanding how safe boot fixed a boot problem
This was not meant as hostile, just as simple as I could make it. Also, I don't see the value of repeating detailed info from Apple. Suggestions on answering such questions? Is giving the link enough? Maybe I'll have to pass on these. Thx!

Not unless you are a real adept at reading logs. Easier to examine what actions you might have taken, in conjunction with using Apple's info as linked.

Am sorry to report that whenever Powerbooks did this, it was logic board. Those random shutdowns.

comment Using Photo Stream and ICloud
The real confusion, on every level, is whether iCloud is storage or streaming sync. Photostream is a trip, but you've got to know the tricks, and does dear Apple ever give instructions?

Apple is just not in the cloud business. Not now. Maybe not ever, unless they focus on it. Hell, I think MobileMe worked better, and sure had nicer stuff--albums, cards, sites, iDisk. Different, I know, Apple and the cloud are a running if fond joke on the Mac blogs about now. Read the sad stories on Apple Support - or don't. Where have all my photos gone?! How to explain to noobs, It mostly all Just Works.

comment Trackpad gesture that minimizes all windows?
Sandboxing, I think, is storing whole copies of apps at system level, and this damn container thing. Sometimes even App Support. I use EasyFind so as not to go mad ...

comment make new Finder windows open at current folder
Damn, you're right. And all these years and I never twigged on Select anything and hit Open. For above comment, I always had a Folder selected. Not sure anymore about answer below, either. Comm-N and Comm-O seem to do same thing.
