A writer on Macs since I first saw a Powerbook. Bought one the next day--and many portables since. Plus now the iPhone and iPad. Picked up a lot of owner-fixes over the years, knowledge that used to be more common and less "procedural" - I understand why Apple has had to formalize it's methods, but this is still a system you can control, repair and maintain as deeply as you want to go.

I see a lot of questions from people afraid of their machines--and a lot that a moment's googling could answer. Both are symptoms of user disempowerment. I'm not sure, in the end, that Apple Geniuses have been all that helpful to both the image and reality of Macs as a user-friendly computing environment. They don't know anything you can't easily know yourself.

Have you tried setting network to no password, temporarily? Or opening Guest? When Lion came out, it was so bad, people were downloading iStumbler and similar to connect. Once established, then Airport Utility could cope.

In System Preferences/Accessibility, you can also click the checkbox "Show Accessibility status in menubar" to keep an eye on what's turned on and what's off.

And try going to Dropbox on the web and temporarily, at least, deleting that device.

Just a note that running MemoryFreer and the indispensable MenuMeters, configured as you like, gives you a fast visual -- plus the mouse-over menu shows a lot of memory info and has link to Activity Monitor.

Apps are not directly downloaded to the Applications folder ... unless you mean Installed. Maybe clarify?

comment Continue managing external drive backups on a different computer
You know what, that may be a perfectly good solution. That's the only official place to change the computer (host) name ...
