A writer on Macs since I first saw a Powerbook. Bought one the next day--and many portables since. Plus now the iPhone and iPad. Picked up a lot of owner-fixes over the years, knowledge that used to be more common and less "procedural" - I understand why Apple has had to formalize it's methods, but this is still a system you can control, repair and maintain as deeply as you want to go.

I see a lot of questions from people afraid of their machines--and a lot that a moment's googling could answer. Both are symptoms of user disempowerment. I'm not sure, in the end, that Apple Geniuses have been all that helpful to both the image and reality of Macs as a user-friendly computing environment. They don't know anything you can't easily know yourself.

... just to add, an app like WiFi Scanner (accessagility.com) will see your networks (hello, Apple).... connecting that way gets future Yosemite recognition going.

Sourcerer, thanks for adding that. It is indeed way glitchier in Yosemite to get on your own 5G network. I should have added, create both network in Airport utility - using some offbeat channels - and once you're on, try switching networks in the network menu extra.

Got iClock Pro? You've got some app that strikes on the hour, probably in menubar. Look thru your login items.

comment Quickly disable internet browsing on iOS device for parental control
I don't know if this is any quicker, but you could chqnge your DNS servers to Opewn DNS, having first selected your filters - tho they have many preselected sets.

Sounds pretty basic, but creating an open Guest network and connecting to that has allowed devices future connections to regular passworded network.

comment Is there any good alternative to winrar archiving utility for mac with ability to browse files before extracting them?
There were a number of QL Generators around when QuickLook was new, one of which browsed zips/archives. Now they seem to be in app packages ...

comment Mac preview crash everytime when searching
The first step is always to trash the Preferences file, whatever the app, as they do become corrupt. Then install a fresh copy.

There is Safari extension called UTM Stripper that may be of help, designed to give you direct links without all the crap Google and Google News adds.

A Powerbook user - how neat. You might very well need to install, first, the OS it came with (9.x.) Try everymac.com or the google for that info.
