→ Kristopher: your Update is a correct answer. Both a technic to analyse a problem through elimination and a solution. Next time you'd like to clearly diagnose such a problem, I advise you to ssh on the ill Mac and use kextstat & kextunload.

→ Mark: if hash doesn't find gcc, which won't do any better. It is simply not found within the actual PATH. See: which direction | sed 's,direction,gcc,' :).

I detected the same problem on Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and XQuartz (2.7.6). I'm only using Xterm and within them I'm either working locally or on remote servers through ssh. → houbysoft: have you already diagnosed that this focus loss is related to the use of ssh?
