Software engineer on the first 64 bits Unix (Cray).
System & network admin. on top of a > 1000 Mac.
30 years experience on top of Unix (and internals).
Chief Information Security Officer.

Security through obscurity is worse than obscurity,
there stand equally hidden trapdoors and firewalls,
there is the kingdom of false security.

comment Sluggish performance with Airport gear on 5 GHz
→ Can: thank you. On both tools, you should sort your networks along the Signal column. From the displayed graphic in the upper left corner of iStumbler, this channel 44 can't be used in this point of measurement (regular total dropouts). Could you replace in your original question the graphics by the ones from iStumbler with the channel 44 alone, and then the channel 4 alone, from the same measurement point and for a duration larger than 5 minutes (so as to fill the upper left graphic)?

comment HFS+ case-sensitive or case-insensitive — which type to use for the primary drive partition?
→ Patrix: how right you are "Adobe still has issues there". Meanwhile, Adobe is sometimes able to make applications which are cleanly programmed and which run without a glitch on nearly every OS on the marketplace (Adobe reader).

comment HFS+ case-sensitive or case-insensitive — which type to use for the primary drive partition?
→ Patrix: I would advise every user to use case sensitive filesystem. No need to discriminate users. Better fight poorly written applications which are the roots of all security vulnerabilities.

comment Printers compatible with case sensitive hardened Mountain Lion
→ Ashley: the reference is my personnal experience ☺. I'm a security bugs hunter. When an application is confusing conf with CONF for a file name, this is the signature of bad coding practices and at least of a lack of quality control. These applications have a higher probability to contain other errors on opening and closing files and veryfying syntax of arguments read or written. Hence these applications are leader targets for cybercriminals. This is a huge progress from Apple to have switched to a case sensitive file system.

comment Alternative Large Cursors
→ Mark: I'd like to add here another closely related wish. Most of the time, when a human reads, his eyes focus progress toward the right & down (in occidental writing habits). And on this path, the tooltips are always hiding the next text to read. How may we place these tooltips on the left and up corner (relative to the actual cursor position) so as to avoid hiding the text we are just trying to read?

comment How do I programmatically and reliably get the AirPort's interface name?
→ Lauri: I meant when I'm using a dedicated location where there is only Ethernet on & defined. This is a configuration I use everyday to analyse network problems.
