comment Headphones Jack not pluggable into Macbook-pro retina socket
Shine a flashlight into the jack and see if there's anything in there preventing full insertion. If not, use a paperclip to push on each contact inside to make sure they move freely with a little force. Examine the headphone plug to make sure it is round and hasn't been damaged. Try it in another device with a headphone jack, and try a different headphone in this jack. If none of this works, report back and tell use what you found at each step.

comment What does repeating beeps mean during charging?
@AndrewU. Could be, but it's been giving me dozens of notifications every 8 seconds like clockwork since I started working on it this morning. Is this how it handles a backlog of notifications, or ??? I don't recall any apps that provide so many notifications, and none of the apps I have on here provide regular 8 second interval notifications.

comment How much free space do I need to install an app update?
@AndrewLarsson Yes, I still consider it unanswered. I don't know if we'll get a definitive answer though, given that we're trying to peek inside Apple's walled garden. But I'll accept your answer anyway.

comment When is a MacBook Pro considered at 'end of life' and in need of replacement?
@Pekka "Hi, I'm a PC!" "And I'm a Mac!" together: "And since all you do is facebook and watch cat videos, we're virtually identical!"

And in a previous company I worked for, they replaced the head of IT with an accounting professional, and axed half the IT department. This is a company with 50k employees, and thousands of IT assets. The cost is of the utmost concern to most heads, and if you can convince them that the employees are less productive on an old machine than a new machine, and measure that productivity in dollars, then you will have a stronger case than "we should follow the industry standard."

comment Is the 9-pin “Lightning” connector faster than the 30-pin?
The adaptive part means that Apple will use it going forward and add features - possibly up to a thunderbolt interface - in the future, but only with newer devices. The iPhone 5 will likely only ever support the 30 pin adapters and perhaps a few upcoming dongles such as video and audio connections.

@Gerry Hmm, interesting! I'll keep track of the badges and see if that's it.

Waiting for the next iPhone, so I don't really want to spend money on this one unless I have no other option...

comment What is the benefit of using flash memory in the Macbook Air?
@gentmatt The Retina Macbook Pro uses an SSD module with a controller/interface. It is not the same form-factor as the SSD used in previous macbook airs, but there is a SATA drive controller (the Samsung S4LJ204X01 was present in the ifixit teardown retina macbook pro). See the iFixit teardown, step 10, for the SATA drive details. So most of the points of this answer are still correct. You'll find that the new 2012 air has a different connector, but it doesn't match that one either.

comment How to connect two non-Thunderbolt displays to the Macbook Pro 2011 via Thunderbolt?
Interesting! The user reviews indicate that it only works in mirror mode, though, you can't use it to extend. I wonder if that's a limitation of the device, or the video driver? If you get one, let us know if you can get it to work in extend mode.

This is an interesting solution, and for some cases would work well enough.

@bmike Yeah, it's begging to be graphically represented. Interesting thought on the HDR photography!

comment Is it productive to use a Stylus with the iPad?
@AngryHacker Procreate allows you to zoom and rotate your image as you draw so you don't need to move the iPad around. It is a very highly rated and popular drawing package for artists. I believe garden gloves or fingerless cycling gloves would work. Try it out and if not, add some padding on the side that touches the iPad or use thicker gloves.

comment How to open (and read) .txt files using iPhone?
My vote goes towards simplenote. If you subscribe to simplenote, you can also get dropbox note synchronization, which will make it trivial for you to use and access the notes across all your devices, computers, and browsers.

Also can't wait for Apple to introduce differential updates. For some apps it won't matter, but for others it would make a huge difference since often very little changes from one version to the next, especially the media and artwork, which often dwarfs the code in storage space.

The workarounds, for now, are to use iTunes, or to delete the app first, then reinstall it. Both are less than ideal, but work for those very large apps that one needs.

comment MacBook Pro battery and speed issues
Those two issues are separate and you'll probably find what you need with these questions: Battery on white MacBook shuts off abruptly after 30% charge is left and Why does my MacBook Pro die without warning?. For the sluggish issue, try Mac book pro is very slow

comment Does iPad rotate right sooner than it rotates left (or up or down)?
I cannot duplicate this on my ipad gen3, it rotates at the same angle off of center whether going clockwise or counterclockwise. Would be nice if some iPad 2 users tested their units.
