I had to beat my head against OSX for several months writing a video driver. OSX is smart in most ways, and dumb in some others. The major problem being that when it's dumb there's often no easy workaround.

comment how to prevent ios from updating apps to incompatible versions
Consider encouraging developers to properly support iOS 4 by posting reviews to the software that no longer works. There's no good reason they can't support iOS 4 (via week linking and runtime detection of available frameworks and functions). Leave reviews suggesting that they do so, and they will listen. Also, I have a 3GS with iOS 5 and after the most recent iOS 5 updates there is no battery problem - I have as much battery life as I had on 4. You might want to revisit your decision, because I think the reason you are holding out is no longer an issue.

pmset does not appear to have an option for dps on this macbook pro. It returns with usage instructions: $ sudo pmset -a dps 0 - Usage: pmset <options> - See pmset(1) for details: 'man pmset'. A pmset -g live does not show the dps option at all, nor any option that suggests CPU throttling control.

Using /Library/Application Support/HWPrefs/CPUPalette.app and disabling two cores gives me the same symptoms, so I'm guessing that OS X is aggressively throttling the CPUs. If you know how to disable CPU throttling, or control it, check out apple.stackexchange.com/questions/41045/…

I am viewing All Processes. It does not show anything that consumes the cpu time suggested by the idle %.
