Started programming Macs back when you needed a Lisa to do it. Switched to Unix about 10 years before Apple did. Now just a fanboy.

This bug is exploitable by a malicious DHCP server (e.g. WiFi hotspot) and can completely pwn your computer, so it's worth fixing ASAP. Other answers have better instruction for replacing /bin/bash and /bin/sh that will likely cause fewer problems than upgrading to Brew's latest bash.

@bmike Filing bug reports with Apple when you're not a developer seems like a waste of time in general, and especially when you are using a feature like hibernate 25 that is explicitly "not supported".

Right, but you set standby 0 thus setting STANDBY to OFF, so standby will not hibernate the machine regardless of the hibernate mode.

Setting hibernate mode 25 does not set the laptop to hibernate automatically, it just sets the behavior when SafeSleep is called for, which is normally triggered by going into standby. I can't shake the feeling that you solved the problem by turning off standby and preventing your laptop from ever hibernating as well as preventing it from ever waking automatically.

My understanding of standby 0 is that it would prevent the laptop from hibernating, but I want the laptop to hibernate. Reading your post I see you solved this by leaving autopoweroff set to 1, but then I'm thinking that (a) that will suck too much battery before kicking in and (b) my computer will be vulnerable longer. With your configuration do you still get the grey screen password prompt every time you wake?

@Buscar웃 If the laptop never gets as far as mounting the disk, what makes you think it will be able to write anything to the Console log?

That provides some information, but not enough to copy it over to another system.

I want to see how the printer is configured on the Mac so I can duplicate that configuration on another Mac. The fact that the printer in question is a USB printer connected to Windows machine is incidental.

I said "printer connected to a Windows computer"

Network utility shows nothing about printer drivers. The printer is a USB printer so the self-test is no help.

comment changing the meta key in emacs
Do you want a solution that works when you are logged into a remote machine, e.g. via SSH, or is it OK if the solution only works for emacs running on your Mac?

comment Can I make unlocking the screensaver also unlock the login keychain?
Like I said, "The workaround is to change the Keychain Settings so the login keychain never automatically locks, but I'd prefer to have it lock automatically"

You said "2nd display now attached through an HDMI --> DVI converter dongle. Previously it was attached through a Newer-brand USB --> DVI adapter." So it was not the exact same configuration.

comment How to specify group id for a user-defined group
@walrus I don't know about that. On Linux systems the command line is easy, but Mountain Lion uses Open Directory and it's more complicated than I've ever wanted to wade into. But you can try 'man dscl' from the command line to get documentation.

comment Alternative Large Cursors
@Mark, the short answer is no. Apple has fully locked down the cursors. The best you can do is something like Mouseposé which puts a big translucent cursor-like image around the cursor, in effect giving you a big cursor without actually replacing the cursor. Then you could use normal size cursor and still read the tooltips through the added highlights.

comment How to have a specific contact make a ring sound even in silent mode
The mute button has priority over other controls. An app that made noise while the mute button was set to mute would not be approved by Apple so you'd have to get a jailbroken phone and custom app.

comment How can I get iMessage to verify my phone number?
What happens when you turn iMessage on on your iPhone? What does it display in text below the iMessage on-off control? Where exactly are you "trying to select your number for messages" and finding it greyed out?

What happens when you paste file://localhost/Users/suyejun/Downloads/code/ in the location bar of a Safari window and hit return? What happens when you use the Finder's Go -> Go to Folder... and paste /Users/suyejun/Downloads/code/ and click Go? Are you sure the folder still exists with that name?
