Started programming Macs back when you needed a Lisa to do it. Switched to Unix about 10 years before Apple did. Now just a fanboy.

comment Open MS Office documents on Windows 7 guest VM in OS X host using Office for Mac
@user329174, presumably the Guest's files are also stored on the Host filesystem (inside the VM package), so having them on the native filesystem (rather than on a virtual filesystem built on top of the native file system) where the Mac applications have 100% complete and ordinary capabilities (e.g. in Mountain Lion the ability to keep versions of files) is better on many levels.

Are you using the same IP address for Windows 7? If not, try it. Your netstat shows a very high number of bad connection attempts. Any idea why? At this point I think you need to set up packet capture to see what's happening on the wire when the timeouts happen. See support.apple.com/kb/HT3994 for instructions or consider using tastycocoabytes.com/cpa . In particular, I want to see if, during the outage, the computer is still sending pings to the router and if there are ping responses on the wire that are being sent to a different Ethernet MAC address.

comment Delete definitely a message from Mail
Gmail considers it a feature that when you delete a message it goes into the trash and is kept there for 30 days before being actually deleted. This allows you to retrieve deleted messages for a while but does eventually get them deleted. AFAIK this is not configurable. As for messages lingering more than 30 days, be sure you are using IMAP, and that you are not actually archiving messages rather than deleting them. By default, most Gmail clients on OS X archive mail when you hit the trashcan button and you need to move messages to the trash folder instead to really delete them.

What is your DHCP configuration like? Is it possible you have a statically assigned IP address conflicting with either another static address or one handed out by DHCP?

@blue, yes, if you do not transfer settings or programs then you will avoid transferring kernel modules. Or course, that means building a new system from scratch...

comment Mac virtual memory: how to make OS X create swap (page) files as freely with a normal boot as it does with a safe boot (swapfile1 etc)
Never heard that called 'mass' before. What causes OS to create more total swap space is more total active memory use, i.e. more need to swap data in and out of memory. It's a bad thing, but if you want to do it you can write a simple C program using mmap and MAP_ANON to eat up all the real memory, forcing everything else into swap.

comment Can I make unlocking the screensaver also unlock the login keychain?
This is not the problem, as I tried to indicate by saying "Yes, my login password and keychain password have been synchronized."

Have you tried KeyPass with Mono 3.0? I haven't tried it but it might work better.
