I'm a hybrid programmer / web designer / psychology researcher. I'm currently doing internet-based psychological interventions with a University of California health research lab, trying to help folks learn skills for creating positive emotions and coping with stress effectively.

I also help non-technologically-inclined researchers and administrators manage and collate large datasets. Munging unruly text files may not be glamorous, but you'd be surprised how often it's what gets the science done.

Further confirmation that there's no built-in way to do this: answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macoutlook/…

Interesting. Are you using Mail with an Exchange server?

Preview hasn't been consistently causing problems, just this morning. I went ahead and cleared the recent files menu.

The 3 finder crash reports are for my user account. I don't recall seeing anything unusual happen at the time. They were, in order, SIGSEGV, SIGBUS, and SIGSEGV. I don't see anything else in there that I'm able to interpret. In my DiagnosticReports folder I have reports for clusters of 3-4 crashes like that every few days in the past couple of weeks.

Preview was crashing when I tried to paste an image from the clipboard. It didn't resemble the problem with apps hanging, and it doesn't seem to be recurring now.

The culprit appears to be Flash. I have it set to request permission on all sites, and the error reliably appears about 30 seconds after permitting it on one of the pages I use frequently. I will refrain from using it and see if that helps.

@Buscar웃 I've added a log.

I'll do that next time I catch it -- as is so often the case, asking for help with the problem seems to have made it temporarily disappear.

@Buscar웃 There don't seem to be any log entries related to the stuck applications.

comment getting “out of memory” error when trying to load specific websites (am not out of RAM)
This works! And unlike my solution, it actually fixes the underlying problem and helps explain what's going on. Thank you!

comment How Do I Use 'cp' to Overwrite Files?
Not sure why this was downvoted. I was under the impression that explicitly specifying -f would override -i in the alias, but I checked and it does not. The poster should find out whether they have cp aliased (type alias cp). They can change the alias in their profile or use /bin/cp as suggested.

Ah, how fleeting memory can be.

@fluffy I hate it too, but it's been that way for as long as I can remember. Did Finder's autocomplete ever work the way it does in the shell?

comment Why did some applications have to rebuild their database after a Time Machine rollback?
Thanks, that helps a lot! I searched for info on this, but I assumed that it was an issue of the backup being out of sync with some external information source rather than Time Machine deliberately excluding some things.

comment How do I enable a standard account to SSH in?
I didn't technically rewrite rm, I wrote trash and aliased rm to trash for my account. But your example goes farther, and provides a strong reason not to do that either...

comment “device not configured” error when attempting to reach specific websites
It doesn't appear to even be trying to load the site. Also note that I get these anomalous error messages when I use ping, so I don't think it has to do with the content of their web pages. I've also verified that these sites respond to pings normally using a different computer.

@Buscar웃 Thanks for the suggestion; I've added a list.

comment My new MBP Retina needs to be recharged after 2 1/2 hours
Yes, if Chrome is constantly running at 100%, that's what's draining your battery. And no, that shouldn't be happening. That usually happens to me when there's a rogue flash application or something like that slamming my processor.

comment Disable copying of file
Why pictures? If they're able to read the code, couldn't they just copy-paste it into a document on their computer? There's no reasonable way to prevent that.
