I'm a hybrid programmer / web designer / psychology researcher. I'm currently doing internet-based psychological interventions with a University of California health research lab, trying to help folks learn skills for creating positive emotions and coping with stress effectively.

I also help non-technologically-inclined researchers and administrators manage and collate large datasets. Munging unruly text files may not be glamorous, but you'd be surprised how often it's what gets the science done.

comment How do I re-enable the touchscreen on my iPhone after I've disabled it?
+1: The original question is vague enough that I dont know if it deserves an answer, or is capable of being answered. However, I salute this effort at cataloging everything that could disable a touchscreen in a theoretically reversible way.

comment How do I enable a standard account to SSH in?
I can sympathize; I wrote my own version of rm to move things to the trash instead of deleting them. See this question for another, hopefully more robust version that you could install.

I still haven't been able to test this, but I'll give it a try when I can. I've awarded the bounty to prevent it from expiring. Thank you for your suggestions.

@AndrewNimmo your suggestion is still the best one I've gotten. If you want to submit it as an answer in the next 2 hours, I'll award the bounty to you. Still haven't been able to test this or any other suggestions... dang intermittent faults.

@AndrewNimmo That sounds like a strong possibility. Frustratingly, I can't reproduce the problem at will, but I'll check that as soon as it recurs.

Thanks for the advice! I had to reboot in order to get some urgent work done, so the problem isn't active right now. I'll be sure to try your suggestion and send a response next time it comes up.

My browsers are in /Applications . I have 333GB of free disk space. I had to reboot in order to get some urgent work done, so the problem isn't appearing right now. I added the response I got from ping last time I tried.

@Mark see above. Ping provides an accurate IP address and then gives the error sendto: Cannot allocate memory.

After a break, the problem's back again. This time it was preventing me from getting to any of my work files, so I really need a fix! Bounty added.

I too have this question. I've searched quite extensively, but I can't find anything (possibly because the search results are jammed by posts about power nap, or about using alerts to wake the compute).
