comment Can I trust Apple Store's employees with my laptop?
I once gave them my password (only because it was a brand new machine with no PII or any useful data on it) and the invoice/receipt they gave me had my password printed on it! You can easily misplace that or they can misplace their copy, etc. The employees probably are trained professionals when it comes to not snooping for PII, but your password info is being moved around in such low-tech ways, that it can easily be stolen.

P.S. Some of the requirements can be relaxed, for reasonable definitions of "relaxed"...

This is applicable only if your dock is at the bottom (I have it on the left).

comment VIM in Terminal using Solarized Theme
You asked – "Has anyone found any other solutions to this?" and I have. The answer is "Ditch Terminal.app". If you don't like that, that's fine. I still stand by my comment in the hopes that someone else will find it useful.

Why don't you use iTerm2? It's much better than Terminal.app

comment Where should shell tools be installed?
Perhaps "core" was the wrong choice of word (since it gave the impression that all of it resided there), but what I wanted to convey is that it is part of your OS and you shouldn't tinker with it. Of course, this is pointless now as you have removed it from your question in an edit. As for texbin, it's a convention that they've adopted and stick to (nothing wrong with that). There's also a /usr/local/texlive, where the packages are installed to.

comment Can OS X be remotely accessed using the GUI but securely to hide what is displayed locally?
Have you tried using LogMeIn? I haven't personally used it since I don't have more than one mac, but a lot of my coworkers have used it and found it very useful.

comment How do I compile vim with the --enable-gui=yes flag on OS X 10.8.2
Although it doesn't work with Eclipse, this answers my question, so +1! Eclipse needs vim with gtk support, but I seem to be having issues compiling that as well. However, that's a different issue and looks like I might be able to fix it myself. Thanks :)

Ah, ok. It's not OS X Server... we're all on our individual macs.

"server based permissions and account management toolset" could you elaborate on that? I understood the shared disk setup to mean that everyone could access others' files unless it was encrypted. Is this not the case?

I'd say this is probably a good life lesson for him... one never truly learns the utility of backing up unless one has actually lost something very valuable.

@Matt Nope, most certainly mean DOE. It was the DOE that developed and set the standards for securing/erasing data.

This is what I thought might be the case... I'll test resetting my PRAM the next time I mess with my computer and accept it then if it works

If they're unpaired, they don't appear in that list

No, that's not the case... as I said in my comment to revolver, I no longer have one of the devices and two others are 30 miles away. I think I also had it as a comment under the question as a response to another commenter, but they removed their comment and so did I

Remote Buddy looks like a great app! I downloaded and am using the 30 day trial. So far, it's terrific and is highly customizable too.
