comment Something appears to be corrupting my kernel.log file, causing 5-10 second lock ups. What gives?
Several things: Have you tried a 3rd party SMART tool like SMART Utility (free to demo)? According to this ancient entry on "MacRumors Forum"(forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=586999) it may be a permissions issue.

comment Mac Pro 2009/10 Doesn't boot after weekend, LED shows for 2 secs then nothing!
You might check the Riser slot for dust. I had this problem after following Apple's recommendation of laying the machine flat to install RAM and dust immediately fell into the riser slot. I had to use a spudger to get the dust out and was afraid I would damage the slot pins. Now, I always work with RAM with the machine upright.

Check the "Graphics/Displays" section of System Information. For a given display, does the "Rotation" line say "Supported"? I feel your pain about 10.8...

Is the known issue with this type of adapter or connecting the monitor to a Mac?

My guess would still be the cable. Did either of the VGA cables have attached magnets? The magnets can prevent the cable from picking up external signals like an antenna. See Ferrite Bead, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_bead for an explanation.

comment Strange artifacting on screen
I've had good luck using a local Mac shop that can perform Applecare repairs. A couple of times they have confirmed the problem and ordered the parts. I brought the machine back when the parts arrived. In both cases the repair was 1-2 days not 7. Good luck.

Can the VGA cable be unattached from where it connects to the monitor? Captive in this case means "cannot be removed".

Are you talking about the brief "blue screens" when you add a monitor or change resolutions? Or does it happen more frequently than that?
