comment Is RAM upgrade worth it if I have an SSD already?
It just struck me that this answer implies one should totally forget about an SSD, max-out memory and create a virtual drive in memory, dump key apps and files in there and go to town. I've done this with some of my older (pre OS X) macs.

+1. Succinct and direct. As the "external enclosure" I recommend Voyager: <eshop.macsales.com/shop/NewerTech/Voyager/Hard_Drive_Dock>;. It's a dock for bare drives, handles various sizes and has multiple I/O connections. AND to be clear, "clone" means "bootable".

+1. Used it for decade+. Intellisense type stuff: look into Ctags (BBedit supports it): "Ctags is a program that generates an index (or tag) file of names found in source and header files of various programming languages. Depending on the language, functions, variables, class members, macros and so on may be indexed." BBedit uses these indexes like intellisense.
