Yeah, this matches with my experiences. I've found that waiting 10 seconds after the drive icon disappears before unplugging the drive prevents the error message. It's a bit annoying (and an example of horrible UI design), but now that I know what's going on it's easy enough to avoid the problem.

Yes, I truncated the output. I have updated my question with the full output. I am certain that the only thing being unplugged is the hard drive. It's usually the only thing connected anyway. I tried waiting 5 seconds after the drive disappeared from Finder before unplugging - still got the error message. There's only one partition called "Time Machine Backups".
