My screenshot is from iTunes 10.7. I guess it's still available in iTunes 11, but maybe at another location.

So actually checking if Thunderbird is currently in use would be sufficient if you could prevent the user from launching it during runtime. (For example by removing the execute priv from the binary. Though this would be a very hacky way.)

It does detect HID, which Timbuktu (lol that still exists?) obviously does not. You may get a simulated HID event by using VNC (e.g. with ScreenSharing.app). You original post didn't say anything about remote control. Just out of curiosity, what is it that you want to run and why would it need the user to be idle. (And what happens when the user becomes active again while it is still running?)

Could it be that you're running a non OS X bundled version of see or GNU sed? Have you checked your $PATH just in case your shell uses sed installed for example by port, homebrew or fink?

It works perfectly on my machines running 10.6.8 (bash) as well as 10.8.2 (zsh). (I don't have a Lion Mac at hand.) You could also try to derive from echo $(( $(ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | grep HIDIdleTime | sed -e 's/[^0-9]//g') / 1000000000 ))

comment Lack of sharing options
The sharing context depends on the selected item. Not every kind of item can be shared with every service. Also it is kind of dumb since it will for example list flickr and Facebook for sharing a picture where I don't have accounts on these platforms (and hence they aren't set up on my Mac).

comment Why file links appear in the folder sidebar and how can I prevent this from happening?
There is no option to lock the sidebar that I know of. A quick glance in the upper left hand corner of the screen next to the  menu will always show the name of the frontmost application that will receive your keystrokes. In my experience you'll get used to where the focus of the system currently is as there are many indicators beyond the application menu.

Is this your own account or a shared IMAP folder from somebody elses account? You can only configure folder subscriptions for shared folders in Mail.app. Your own folders will always be synced.

Did you copy/paste the command? Mixing up the different kinds of quotes and backticks will break it. Just in case copying doesn't work here use this paste bin pastebin.com/7JrPNxYU

With iMac 2012 you mean the model without an optical drive on the side? 21.5" or 27" model?

comment How do I find the windowid of Google Chrome to pass to screencapture -l
As the original poster added, he explicitly needs a screenshot of the Chrome browser window, and that one will include a scrollbar at times. If you want to do screenshots of full webpages without any browser chrome (toolbars, location bar, scrollbars, etc.) you can use Webkit2PNG. github.com/paulhammond/webkit2png
