Thank you for the suggestion. I hold down the Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time, and then release all the keys and power button at the same time. The computer then turns on all by itself without having to press the power button again. What could I be doing wrong? TIA.

At this point I would be happy with re-installing Mavericks or Yosemite or any operating system. The install of Lion worked, and it got to the point of me entering in personal information, but at that point both the mouse and keyboard were unresponsive so I did a hard reset on the computer.
