comment Why don't I have to install programs?
It's worth noting that just dragging the *.app folder into your local disk can trigger file actions. Also, that nnn.app is a folder, not a file. How mac apps work is fairly involved.

comment Skype integration in OSX Messages
It should be theoretically possible, but it would require skype using undocumented Apple API calls, which they generally don't like people doing too much.

comment Really, REALLY strange behaviour when editing text files on a OS X host from a windows client over SMB
TBH, I haven't looked much recently. 10.9 was a massive disaster for SMB performance, and I bought a windows tablet that I really like, so I haven't been using my laptop much. as of late.

@PandaPajama - Nope. I've mostly given up on OS X for any network file-management stuff. I use ssh+rmate+sublime+rsub for editing remote files at this point, though it's only a viable option for plain text files you want to edit in sublime text, and you have an open ssh session. Frankly, I've almost entirely gone back to windows for coding.

comment How does the Finder refresh in OS X Mountain Lion?
Network files with multiple people editing them simultaneously is a particularly common situation that pretty much requires the ability to force a refresh of the current directory.

comment How does the Finder refresh in OS X Mountain Lion?
The best answer, as far as my experience has been, is "Poorly, if at all". There are workaround hacks, but they tend to be equally touchy. Apple need to get over themselves, and just admit that a "refresh" button is occasionally needed, even if it's not supposed to be required.

comment MacBook keyboard error, only letters not working
@bluewoodtree - you can always remove kernel extensions. Doing a complete reinstall-remigrate is a bit overkill when all you would need to do is delete the right kext, and reboot.

comment Why does the MacBook Air have five pins on the charger?
The center pin does nothing with regard to switching the adapter off. It's only used for controlling the LED on the plug, and reporting to the laptop which kind of adapter it is connected to. The actual cable between the magjack, and the adapter has only two conductors (power and ground).
