revised Tools to compress and encrypt files
FileVault is not a command line term; You can create a DMG which is both compressed and encrypted.

comment Why can't I open DMG files which reside on a read-only NFS filesystem?
Absolutely, and now I know what I need to change should I need this again in the future! (The goal previously was to place the /Library of our NetBoot image n a RAID array. We no longer need this as we purchased a new Mac Pro server)

Regarding your edit, no, using both -readonly and -shadow would read from a shadow file but mount the image read-only. So for example it would allow you to read changes made to a shadow file without updating that shadow file. The issue was NFS locks as jaume discovered.

No, you misunderstand. I wanted to attache a read-only image as a read-write volume with a shadow file.

Thanks jaume, this worked like a charm! Unfortunately I have already found an alternative and no longer need to mount this same DMG with a shadow file, but nolocks, locallocks is helping NFS performance of other read-only NFS shares with DMG files, so thank you!

comment Encrypting sensitive data on Mac + Windows
The best way to store encrypted files on Mac OS X is inside an encrypted DMG or a sparsebundle... but I am not sure how well those would play with DropBox. Do you have a local Mac file server?

comment How can I disable the Screen Saver on the login window?
The file is a binary plist file (under 10.8 anyway) and to be edited with a text editor must first be converted using plutil -convert xml1 /Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist. Then the file can be edited and the screen saver changed.

comment How I can move the clock to the middle of the menu bar?
There really is no way to position a Menu Extra in the middle of the menu bar. It is possible you might find a third party clock application which you can get to display the time there, but it won't be a Menu Extra. There's no way to position Menu Extras (Like the built in clock which displays in the menu bar) in the middle.
